A mind eel represented a certain species of eel, and this species was indigenous to the West Fissure. The West Fissure itself was an agricultural area found on a particular planet situated in proximity to the moon called Raspar-6. This planet existed within the Raspar star system, which, in turn, was located inside the Tragan Cluster within the vast expanse of the Outer Rim Territories.
Mind eels flourished, exhibiting excitement whenever solar flares impacted the planet's surface. Weather reports advised observing mind eels and their young during these stellar flares. On one time, these flares manifested during the months designated as Neevlit and Dha in that world's calendar. These organisms disregarded the established crop boundaries defined by The Relevant Farm Act of Thairwsthis 12.
Mind eels were noted within a weather forecast spanning a single page. This forecast, entitled "Region 29: The West Fissure," was authored by Bob Carrau for inclusion in the 1993 publication Monsters and Aliens from George Lucas. This book combined creature designs along with photographs originating from various projects by George Lucas, the creator of the Star Wars franchise, with original written content contributed by Carrau. Lucasfilm employee Leland Chee, who is in charge of the Holocron continuity database, has stated that the data contained in the book is considered non-canonical. The book did not specify the sentience level of the species.
