During the era of the Galactic Civil War, Kutu, a female medical researcher from the Ho'Din species, journeyed to the planet of Kirtania. Her purpose was to study the jungle's flora near Kinkosa City. Her hope was to collaborate with the renowned Araquian scientist, Doctor T'Jaleq Kith'Araquia, merging her expertise in medicinal plants with his. However, upon her arrival, she was shocked to witness the systematic destruction of the rain forest by the forces of the Galactic Empire, who intended to use the area as a new supply depot. Furthermore, she learned that Doctor Kith'Araquia was wanted by the state of Kinkosa and the Empire for alleged acts of terrorism. Hesitant to venture into the jungle alone to find Kith'Araquia, Kutu began a search for companions. She encountered a group that seemed interested in the bounty on the doctor's head. She surmised that if they were indeed bounty hunters, she might be able to lure them into a trap. Conversely, if their intentions were honorable, she could potentially join forces with them. Claiming knowledge of the doctor's whereabouts, she offered to guide the group—unaware that they were actually covert Rebel operatives seeking a cure for a Direllian Plague outbreak at their base—through the dense jungle terrain.
The Rebels accepted Kutu's offer of guidance, and she aided them in their journey through the rain forest. Along their path, they encountered Pierce Mantrell, a Human thief who had pilfered the Amber Eye from the local crime lord, Schnil Hakoon. Eventually, the group located the Araquian camp, where Kith'Araquia agreed to assist the Rebels after the tribe had launched an assault on a nearby Imperial work camp. Despite the success of the attack, the Imperial forces retaliated by setting the forest ablaze in an attempt to eliminate the insurgents. Doctor Kith'Araquia led them to safety, providing the Rebels with Shiarha Root to combat their plague outbreak, and requested that they evacuate the non-combatant Araquians from the planet. Kith'Araquia resolved to remain behind and continue the insurgency, and Kutu decided to stay with him, believing that the Araquians would require medical assistance.
Kutu, an adventurous Ho'Din, possessed training in the use of a blaster and carried a pistol. She was also proficient in the art of throwing weapons.
