An advanced species was discovered after New Republic scout Korren Starchaser spearheaded an expedition to the Serianan system. Evidence pointing to the species's existence was uncovered by Starchaser, including the inhabited planet Serias within the same star system. Furthermore, the Serianan Belt held runes of varying sizes, suggesting construction by beings wielding tools requiring more power than Starchaser's team possessed, given the asteroids' density. Starchaser also came across five alien statues, leading him to speculate that their creators were humanoids, though not Humans. The team then collected the statues, documented the runes, and left to analyze their information. Subsequently, a team of alien xenoarchaeologists discovered the mysteries of the Serianan system and began their own investigations. A subsequent visit by the New Republic Scout Service revealed the presence of independent scientists and prospectors aiming to exploit the asteroids. Later, a group of spacers was captured by pirates and taken to a base resembling one of the Serianan statues.
Following the discovery of evidence of a sentient species within the Serianan system by scout Korren Starchaser of the New Republic Scout Service, he and his team set about analyzing the artifacts left behind by these beings. The aim was to gain insights into the physical characteristics of their creators. Starchaser hypothesized, based on the size of runes found inside a sizable cavern located in the Serianan Belt of asteroids, that the species was humanoid but definitively non-Human, and significantly different from Humans.

The runes, as discovered by the New Republic scouts, suggested that their creators were an advanced, spacefaring civilization. The existence of some runes as large as several scout ships lined up end to end, alongside others visible only to specific sensors, pointed to construction methods beyond the understanding of the galaxy during the time of the New Republic. Similarly, the high mineral density of the asteroids, which made carving difficult, led Starchaser to deduce that the species's tools required significantly more energy than his team's equipment could provide.
The creators of the Serianan runes also fashioned statues depicting alien structures complete with domes, stairways, and doors. These sculptures were composed of the same minerals as the asteroids, yet their density was lower than the surrounding rock, allowing an average humanoid to lift them easily. The statues measured 0.5 meters in height and one meter in width, displaying a rust-orange color and complete opacity. Attempts by the New Republic team to scan the five discovered statues to determine their internal structure proved unsuccessful. A sixth sculpture was found in the possession of pirates residing in a nearby base that mirrored one of the statues in design. The statues, when joined, formed a ring approximately two meters wide.

A team led by New Republic scout Korren Starchaser led an expedition to the Serianan system. During the expedition, they discovered that the terrestrial planet Serias was inhabited. Additionally, they found runes carved into the asteroids of the Serianan Belt. The team then dedicated the remainder of their time to cataloging the runes and exploring a large cavern within one of the asteroids, which they named the Gulch. Inside this depression, they found more runes and five stone statues nestled in a niche in the rock. The team then gathered the statues and copied down the runes for later analysis. Starchaser decided to keep the discovery secret and avoid contact with Serias's inhabitants until he could show the artifacts and writing to Maxina Sensis, a xenoarchaeologist at Daxis Outpost in the Jandolhoon system. Starchaser hoped that this would prevent exploitation of the Serianan system and its inhabitants.
However, Starchaser received word that his discovery had been leaked, leading to concerns that Imperial remnant factions might claim it. Meanwhile, Sensis, after initial analysis, advocated for another expedition to gather more data. In the meantime, a group of independent, non-Human archaeologists arrived at the Serianan system and investigated the runes, making significant progress in deciphering the writing, its history, and the relationship between the runes and the statues. However, their procedures were less secretive, and prospectors learned of the asteroids and came to exploit them.
The New Republic Scout Service dispatched a follow-up group to continue the earlier research in the Gulch. There, they encountered the non-Human team of scientists. The two groups then allied to keep the prospectors away and share data.
Later, a group of spacers traveled to the Serianan system to find the missing alien statue for their patron. On the way, pirates stopped and kidnapped them, taking them to their hidden base, which was a massive replica of one of the Serianan sculptures. The captives then investigated the connection between the pirates, the statues, and their creators. They also found the missing Serianan statue, stole it, escaped, and returned it to their patron.
The details surrounding the discovery of the Serianan runes and statues are detailed in the article "Scouts' Dispatch," which was published in Star Wars Adventure Journal 8 in November 1995. The article, written by Peter Woodworth, is an in-universe report from New Republic scout Korren Starchaser. The piece does not confirm Starchaser's assumptions about the makers of the runes and statues. The Adventure Journal issue includes two adventure seeds for gamemasters of Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game to use; this article assumes the scenarios play out as described.
