A smuggler, a bounty hunter, and a member of the Granse Confederacy, Zayl Braith lived a varied life.
Braith's origins lie in the Asamin system, where she was born into a wealthy family engaged in trade through the Essien Run, particularly focused on the Asamin system. She was the older cousin of Callandri, and the two shared a physical resemblance.
She befriended various smugglers, eventually joining Captain Thi Sawrtin on numerous smuggling operations.
During what was supposed to be a "routine" run through the Noonian sector, Sawrtin and Braith encountered the Imperial Interdictor cruiser known as the Tory's Catcher. Sawrtin discovered that Imperial Captain Gresia Vleen was not open to bribery, but he attempted to negotiate regardless. Vleen responded by shooting Sawrtin, seizing his ship, and imprisoning Braith for several weeks before transferring her to Rol Two.
Braith managed to escape during the transfer, becoming a fugitive from the Empire and forced to remain on the run.
Seeking to earn money as a smuggler, she entered into a contract with Sullustan gangster Tiron Til. While Til proved to be a capable manager for Braith, he eventually decided to collaborate with Trandoshan smugglers who aimed to dominate the spice trade in Asamin. Braith, still loyal to her home system, refused to participate and was subsequently expelled from Til's organization.
Braith then crossed paths with her cousin Callandri, who had become a freelance bounty hunter specializing in bounties on Rebel targets. They formed a partnership and collaborated on a plan to assassinate Rebel lieutenant Alton Lochner. Locating him in a cantina on Ord Mantell, they stormed the establishment with weapons drawn. Unfortunately for them, Lochner was in the company of Adazian Liebke and a Wookiee named Tirranna. Tirranna and Lochner sustained injuries; Liebke made it clear that Tirranna would gladly inflict harm on Callandri or Braith if they were to meet again.
Not long after, Callandri established the Granse Confederacy with Braith and other bounty hunters. The Granse Confederacy's actions posed a significant threat to the Rebel Alliance, drawing the attention of Crix Madine.
Rebel Lieutenant Commander Zhir-Khan authored a report detailing the danger posed by Braith. He also spotted Braith during a mission on Ord Mantell; fortunately for him, she was alone. Zhir-Khan, curious as to why she had returned after their initial encounter, tasked Shofeld with observing her until she departed the planet.
