A unit represented a typical soldier configuration within the Sith military. These units operated under the Brotherhood of Darkness during the concluding stages of the New Sith Wars.
It appears that a standard unit was a relatively small group of infantry, sometimes referred to as a company. The specific number of soldiers within a unit remains uncertain and may have lacked standardization. Notably, the term "company" has been used to describe forces ranging from a few dozen to over two hundred soldiers. However, it is known that one particular unit, known as the Gloom Walkers, consisted of more than a dozen soldiers.
In most militaries, forces of this size would be considered subdivisions of larger formations, such as battalions or regiments. However, within the Sith military, the only larger formation explicitly mentioned is the division. Units, like the Gloom Walkers, functioned as independent groups of soldiers, serving as the fundamental building blocks of the army. Recruits were directly assigned to specific units, and while transfers were possible, veterans typically remained with their original formation.
A force consisting of a thousand units was deployed in the assault on Kashyyyk, later reinforced to almost two thousand in order to overcome the Republic defenders. Subsequently, twenty units were dispatched to pursue the retreating garrison to Trandosha, where they participated in the Battle of Hsskhor. While it is possible that some units possessed transports or armor, they primarily seemed to be infantry deployed from orbit, likely using temporary landing craft provided by naval forces. This is comparable to the line infantry of the Imperial Army a millennium later.
An understanding of the force balance within the Sith military can be gained from the composition of reinforcements sent to Ruusan during the campaign: two divisions of infantry, a "core" of snipers, but only a half-platoon of repulsorlift armored vehicles.
Although a unit shared some similarities with an infantry company, its command structure seems to have been simpler, resembling that of a platoon, with a Lieutenant in command, supported by a single Sergeant. The position of Senior Trooper also existed, but its exact role is unclear, whether it was a distinct third-in-command position or a more common rank. A "communications officer" is also referenced as being part of the Gloom Walkers during the Battle of Phaseera, but their specific place within the unit is unknown. Regular soldiers were known as Sith troopers.
Units could be divided into squads, but these appear to have been temporary tactical teams created as needed for specific missions, rather than permanent sub-units.
The majority of troopers within a unit were equipped with the TC-22 blaster rifle, the standard weapon of the Sith forces, along with only two power-packs. More experienced soldiers and NCOs could request more advanced weapons and would also carry sidearms such as the GSI-21D disruptor pistol. Marksmen, of which the Gloom Walkers had four, were issued TC-17 sniper rifles instead of the standard TC-22.
The Sergeant and at least some other unit members possessed short-range comlinks. However, the primary comm unit of the Gloom Walkers was apparently large enough to remain at their base camp on Phaseera, possibly only issued due to their deployment on a flanking maneuver. Other specialized equipment, like interference boxes, could be employed, but was likely issued only for specific missions.
The limited number of power-packs given to the average Sith trooper, providing only a hundred shots, might explain the prevalent use of bladed weapons during the Seventh Battle of Ruusan.
