Korvix Vorn

The Korvix Vorn functioned as a prison ship for the Nihil marauders during the High Republic Era. This starship, managed by the former enforcer known as "The Warden," operated primarily within the Nihil's Occlusion Zone territory, a region shielded by the Stormwall, though it occasionally ventured outside Nihil space for supply deliveries. Following the destruction of the Starlight Beacon space station, several Jedi, including Torban Buck and Farzala Tarabal, found themselves imprisoned aboard the Korvix Vorn, concealing their true identities. "The Warden" sought to utilize the Nameless creatures of young Nihil scientist Niv Drendow Apruk to identify Jedi among his prisoners; consequently, Apruk, accompanied by fellow Nihil Driggit Parse, decided to travel to the Korvix Vorn, hoping to leverage its facilities to cultivate more Nameless.

Argomon, a smuggler, and B-333, a droid belonging to the spy network of droid 5A-G3, gathered intelligence from the Korvix Vorn and transported it beyond the Occlusion Zone during their delivery runs to the ship using a black market hauler. 5A-G3 relayed this information to the Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic, prompting them to assemble a strike force under the command of Admiral Pevel Kronara of the Republic Defense Coalition to execute a raid on the prison vessel. Simultaneously, the Warden and Apruk were preparing to unleash the Nameless upon the prisoners within the shielded yard located atop the ship, but Tarabal and his Jedi allies revealed their true nature and mounted a defense against the Nihil. Following the arrival of Jedi forces aboard the Korvix Vorn, the Warden gave the order to have the shield lowered, exposing the prisoners to the vacuum of space.

Description

The prison ship Korvix Vorn featured a blocky, rectangular form, distinguished by a central tower at its front that curved upwards and over the vessel. The flat upper deck of the Korvix Vorn served as the yard, where prisoners congregated in front of a raised platform. A loading dock was positioned in a protruding section of the central tower, just beneath a laboratory. Other sections of the Korvix Vorn encompassed a control room and level 3. A red light shone from the windows of the ship. According to the droid B-333, the Korvix Vorn was an untidy, poorly maintained vessel plagued by excessive dampness.

The prison ship was equipped with several engines at its rear, along with a hyperdrive. Batteries of laser cannons, complemented by hull blister bombs, lined its bilge and elevated areas. The Korvix Vorn had a shield generator at the peak of its central tower that also powered a substantial shield to safeguard the yard from the hazards of space.

History

Prison ship of the Nihil

During the High Republic Era, the Korvix Vorn prison ship was used by the Nihil marauder group and overseen by "The Warden," a Nihil enforcer who had fallen from grace. The ship operated within the Occlusion Zone, the Nihil's territory behind the Stormwall barrier that was established in 230 BBY. The prison ship occasionally left the Occlusion Zone in various locations to conduct supply runs, and several black market operators were associated with it. Following the destruction of the Starlight Beacon space station earlier that year, several survivors, including Jedi Master Torban Buck, Jedi Knight Farzala Tarabal, Jedi Padawan Bindal Sep, and Jedi Order ally Ishnar Ti-Kharatal, were imprisoned by the Nihil on the Korvix Vorn. Another prisoner was a mysterious masked woman. The Warden suspected that some of his prisoners were Jedi, intending to identify and execute them, but the Jedi survivors of Starlight Beacon managed to hide their true identities for the year following the station's destruction. To prevent escapes, the Warden threatened to kill one prisoner for each day any escapees remained at large, a threat that kept the Jedi in check.

Niv Drendow Apruk operated on the Korvix Vorn, hatching Nameless.

During that same period, the Warden wanted the young Nihil scientist Niv Drendow Apruk to use his Nameless creatures to identify the Jedi among the Korvix Vorn's prisoners. After Apruk fled the planet Valo on a shuttle piloted by fellow Nihil Driggit Parse, he made the decision to travel to the Korvix Vorn penal ship. Apruk hoped to use the ship's facilities to hatch another Nameless after the death of his previous one, Grendrek, and to have their black market contacts smuggle Mycopram to aid in the hatching process. Parse, secretly intending to gain Apruk's trust before betraying the Nihil, agreed to join him, setting the penal ship as their destination before entering hyperspace. Once aboard the Korvix Vorn, Apruk eventually acquired several new Nameless, including Deblindrix III.

Escape plots and espionage

Outside the Occlusion Zone, the Korvix Vorn was monitored by the spy network of the droid 5A-G3, who collaborated with members of the Jedi Order and their allies, including Jedi Master Kantam Sy and the Force-sensitive Zeen Mrala. The black market hauler crewed by smuggler Argomon and the droid B-333, acting as spies for 5A-G3, frequently delivered supplies to the Korvix Vorn for the Nihil, gathering intelligence from Tarabal, B-333's source within the ship.

Argomon and B-333 infiltrated the Korvix Vorn under the guise of delivering a shipment to Apruk.

After learning from B-333 that the Korvix Vorn would soon exit the Stormwall for a supply run, Sy and Mrala planned to place a tracker on the ship to determine its destination. To accomplish this, they tasked Argomon and B-333 with entering the Occlusion Zone and boarding the Korvix Vorn. As Argomon delivered a shipment of Mycopram to Apruk, B-333 slipped away to meet with Tarabal, who announced the start of a plan to escape the ship. Argomon returned to the Republic and Jedi base on Eriadu, where a strike team was assembled under the command of Admiral Pevel Kronara of the Republic Defense Coalition. Based on information provided by 5A-G3's spies, the Republic's technicians developed a basic model of the Korvix Vorn.

Prison break

As the Korvix Vorn exited the Occlusion Zone, the Jedi and Republic strike team prepared to launch a raid on the ship. The Warden gathered the prisoners in the yard to test the Nameless, despite Apruk and Parse's concerns about being too exposed. The Warden declared that he finally had a method to identify the Jedi among the prisoners. Tarabal, signaling his allies to wait, created a distraction, leading the Warden to order him to be brought forward as a volunteer. Apruk released his Nameless, observing its effect on Tarabal, but Ti-Kharatal drew the Nihil's attention by declaring herself a Jedi. Tarabal and his other allies followed suit, initiating a skirmish against the Nihil.

Simultaneously, the Republic and Jedi strike team—comprising several Pacifier-class cruisers, Z-28 Skywings, Jedi Vectors, and a transport intended to deliver a boarding party to rescue the prisoners—exited hyperspace and began their attack on the Korvix Vorn. The Warden ordered the yard to be sealed, rejecting Apruk's argument that they could retreat back across the Stormwall, believing the Jedi were exactly where he wanted them. As the Warden had hoped, Kronara ordered his fighters to delay their plan to target the shield generator to avoid endangering the prisoners in the yard. Despite the Jedi pilots' efforts to neutralize them, the blister bombs were causing significant damage to the Republic vessels, forcing Kronara to order his forces to withdraw and regroup out of range.

However, Mrala and Lula Talisola, piloting the transport, refused to retreat. Argomon, aboard the transport with 5A-G3, suggested using their access to enter the loading dock. While Master Tani Briwill and the others distracted the Korvix Vorn's cannons, Mrala landed the transport in the prison ship, followed by Jedi Knight Qort and Padawan Ady Sun'Zee in a Vector. The assembled boarding party overcame the Nihil resistance, fighting their way towards the yard. Upon learning of the breach, the Warden ordered the control room to briefly drop the shields, exposing the Jedi and the other prisoners in the yard to the vacuum of space.

Commanders and crew

The Korvix Vorn was managed by the disgraced Nihil enforcer known as the Warden and staffed by a number of droids. The scientist Niv Drendow Apruk worked aboard the ship, as did Driggit Parse, who served as his associate. Several Nihil also served as guards on the Korvix Vorn. Prisoners on the Korvix Vorn wore identical white hooded jumpsuits.

Behind the scenes

The Korvix Vorn was first mentioned, though indirectly, in an interview with Daniel José Older and Alyssa Wong, authors of the novel The High Republic: Escape from Valo in Phase III of the Star Wars: The High Republic publishing initiative, which was published on StarWars.com on January 23, 2024. The ship was later mentioned and identified in Escape from Valo, released on January 30 of that year. The Korvix Vorn made its debut in the third issue of the 2023 Dark Horse Comics Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures comic series, written by Older, with illustrations by Harvey Tolibao and Nick Brokenshire, and published on February 14, 2024. Older designed the Korvix Vorn, assuring fans that the design was not based on an overhead projector despite its resemblance.
