The Defender is a position that existed in the traditional challenge by personal combat found in the legends of Guiteica.
Within the challenge, two combatants would fight each other utilizing dematoils. The role of the Succession Judge was to observe without bias. Each combatant had the option of a Defender, whose original purpose was to prevent unwelcome interference during the fight, but whose more frequent role was to ensure the duel remained honorable.
When Quaal Tavier Catharius fought against his foe Jael Ganton Farvash, Aul Tarrus Vishav served as Catharius's Defender.
