Bela Elar, a female Twi'lek who served as a pilot for the Alliance to Restore the Republic, participated in the war against the Galactic Empire. She was a member of Red Squadron.
During the time of the Galactic Civil War, Bela Elar piloted her craft with Red Squadron, identified by the callsign Red Four. Sometime following the Battle of Yavin, she engaged in a battle within the Kiax Nebula.
Not long after the evacuation of Hoth in 3 ABY, Elar found herself in a precarious situation while piloting her T-65B X-wing starfighter: her alluvial dampers were damaged, necessitating an extravehicular repair in the vastness of space. Subsequently, Commander Wedge Antilles and Wes Janson recruited Elar back into Red Squadron, which had been recently reformed, entrusting her with the responsibility of leading her own flight. As flight leader, she piloted a T-65B X-wing starfighter in an attack aimed at a nearby pirate base, which posed a threat to the Alliance's designated meeting location. Grizz Frix and Penn Zowlie served as her wingmen during this operation. Her flight's mission was to provide interference, safeguarding Janson's flight as they targeted key points on the landing field. Although Zowlie perished during the engagement, the newly assembled squadron successfully neutralized the pirates.
Elar was held in high regard as a pilot, earning her a spot as one of the initial selections for the revamped Red Squadron. Janson was greatly impressed after Antilles shared the account of her repairing the alluvial dampers in deep space, and he considered her to be an exceptional pilot, as well as the squadron's de facto engineering expert.
