Anto Kreegyr

Anto Kreegyr was a male human who chose to fight for the Separatist Alliance during the Clone Wars. Later, during the Galactic Empire's reign, he rose to prominence within the Neo-Separatist Coalition. Kreegyr's group collaborated remotely with a rebel network secretly overseen by the rebel spy Luthen Rael. By the year 5 BBY, Kreegyr had started to plan an assault against the Imperial power station located on Spellhaus. Rael attempted to enlist the help of the extremist Saw Gerrera and his rebel faction, the Partisans, for this attack, but Gerrera declined. Simultaneously, one of Kreegyr's pilots was apprehended by the Empire at a customs checkpoint and, during interrogation, revealed details about the planned Spellhaus attack.

The Imperial Security Bureau devised a plan to ambush Kreegyr's group. They orchestrated an incident that resulted in the death of the pilot, aiming to prevent Kreegyr from suspecting anything. An ISB Supervisor, Lonni Jung, who was secretly working as a mole for Rael, informed him about the ISB's knowledge. However, Rael made the decision to prioritize Jung's safety over the well-being of Kreegyr's group. When Gerrera eventually changed his mind and decided to participate in the Spellhaus attack, Rael cautioned him that the ISB was aware of Kreegyr's intentions. The spy had to allay Gerrera's concerns about Rael's willingness to sacrifice the entire rebel cell, which was unaware of the ISB's awareness. The following day, Kreegyr and his group launched their attack, only to be swiftly eliminated by the Imperial trap that awaited them, resulting in the complete annihilation of the group.

Biography

Rebel activities

During the Clone Wars, a widespread galactic conflict between the Galactic Republic and the Separatist Alliance that spanned from 22 BBY to 19 BBY, Anto Kreegyr fought on the side of the Separatists. The war concluded with the Separatists' defeat and the Republic's transition into the Galactic Empire under the rule of Emperor Sheev Palpatine. However, Kreegyr remained committed to the Separatist cause throughout the Empire's reign, becoming a key figure in the Neo-Separatist Coalition, which sought recognition from the Imperial Senate. The Empire took notice of Kreegyr, with the Imperial Security Bureau (ISB) maintaining files on him. Kreegyr's personal neo-Separatist cell prioritized independence from the Empire above all else.

By 5 BBY, Kreegyr and his rebels maintained a remote association with a clandestine rebel network that provided them with supplies, including Imperial naval equipment. Kreegyr's group communicated with the network's secret leader, the rebel spy Luthen Rael, via specialized radios. Although the Neo-Separatist had never personally met the spy, they had unknowingly been in the same room on one occasion. While Rael successfully orchestrated a heist on the remote planet Aldhani, which dealt a significant blow to the Empire, Kreegyr had been investigating the Imperial power station on the celestial body Spellhaus, identifying a vulnerability in its defenses. Consequently, Kreegyr's group, comprised of approximately thirty to fifty individuals, began formulating a plan to destroy the power station.

Luthen Rael attempted to recruit Saw Gerrera to join forces with Anto Kreegyr.

Upon learning of these plans, Rael grew concerned that Kreegyr's rebels would be unable to execute the attack independently and decided to seek assistance from his network. The rebel spy met with Saw Gerrera, the leader of the extremist rebel group known as the Partisans, at Gerrera's base on the Outer Rim Territories planet Segra Milo. Rael attempted to persuade Gerrera to aid Kreegyr in destroying the Spellhaus power station by offering stolen Imperial technology. Despite the spy's arguments for greater cooperation among rebel cells, Gerrera rejected the proposal, describing Kreegyr as a slow and unintelligent ox and asserting that the other rebel groups were all doomed.

The ISB plot

Several days later, a pilot belonging to Kreegyr's group was captured aboard his GPE 7000 transport while attempting to pass through an Imperial customs inspection during a supply run to the Ring of Kafrene trading outpost. The pilot utilized an Imperial masking unit that had been stolen from the naval facility in Lozash the previous year. Detained on a destroyer near Steergard, the pilot was interrogated by the ISB and quickly divulged all he knew about Kreegyr's plans to attack Spellhaus.

ISB Supervisor Dedra Meero was particularly eager to exploit this information, hoping to locate Rael, whom she only knew as an unknown individual she referred to as "Axis." She and one of her attendants, Heert, presented their findings to ISB Major Lio Partagaz and several other supervisors and attendants at the ISB Central Office on the Imperial capital world of Coruscant. During a meeting, the ISB personnel discussed how to avoid arousing Kreegyr's suspicion in order to set a trap for him. Given that Kreegyr and his group were still unaware of the pilot's capture, Meero suggested staging an accident aboard the captured pilot's transport in which the pilot would be found dead in the cockpit. Partagaz approved Meero's plan and instructed two other supervisors, Lonni Jung and Lagret, to arrange a meeting for him with military intelligence regarding Spellhaus.

The ISB proceeded with their scheme, and the pilot was sent toward Kafrene, seemingly frozen in his cockpit due to a hydraulic failure upon re-entry from hyperspace. Kafrene Rescue Salvage discovered and reported the transport. As the transport was towed into the trading outpost, Kreegyr's rebels requested a landing bay on Kafrene, attracting the Empire's attention. Observing from Coruscant, Jung suggested to Partagaz that the ISB proceed as usual and express interest in the known nature of the GPE 7000's arrival to prevent Kreegyr from becoming suspicious, to which Partagaz agreed.

Protecting a double-agent

Unbeknownst to the rest of the ISB, Jung was secretly working as a mole for Rael. The supervisor arranged a meeting with Rael in the lower levels of Coruscant. During their meeting, Jung informed the spy about Meero's investigation into "Axis" and revealed that the ISB was aware of the planned attack on Spellhaus. Jung hoped that by providing this information, he could save Kreegyr's group and be allowed to retire from his work with Rael's network. However, Rael refused to allow Jung to leave the network and had no intention of warning Kreegyr about the Empire's trap, as it would compromise the mole.

Meanwhile, on the Outer Rim planet Ferrix, another of Rael's contacts, the technician Bix Caleen, was being held in Imperial custody and interrogated about her knowledge of the spy. Corv, Meero's other attendant, showed the prisoner a holographic image of Kreegyr and asked if the Neo-Separatist was "Axis." Ultimately, the attendant was unable to link Kreegyr to his target.

Playing the long game

Rael returned to Segra Milo to meet with Gerrera, who had changed his mind and now wanted to join the Spellhaus attack. After initially making excuses for his lateness, the spy revealed to his ally that the ISB was aware of Kreegyr's plans. A paranoid Gerrera struggled to trust Rael, questioning whether the spy considered him expendable, as he was treating Kreegyr. Admitting that he had been faced with a difficult decision, Rael convinced the Partisan leader that his decision to allow Kreegyr's group to walk into a trap and die was for the greater good and that he was not himself an ISB spy.

The Imperial Security Bureau remotely observed Kreegyr's defeat at Spellhaus.

The following day, Kreegyr and his rebels, still unaware that the ISB knew of their plans, launched their attack on Spellhaus, walking directly into an Imperial trap. All the rebels were swiftly killed in the process, with the ISB observing from the Central Office. After the engagement, Partagaz spoke remotely with Meero, who was pursuing a lead on "Axis" on Ferrix. Meero expressed her dissatisfaction that no prisoners were taken from Kreegyr's group, but the major reassured her, stating that Kreegyr's defeat had erased the embarrassment of the Aldhani heist from Emperor Palpatine's mind.

A file documenting the Spellhaus events was maintained in the Imperial Security Bureau section of the Imperial Archives. Gerrera and the eventually formed Rebel Alliance kept their own files on Kreegyr, which notably differed on the number of men who died at Spellhaus. After reviewing the relevant files, historian Beaumont Kin wrote about Kreegyr's defeat, commenting that the ISB had missed an opportunity to gather more information about Rael's network by killing all of Kreegyr's rebels as a political statement. Kin included his thoughts in his book The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire in 35 ABY.

Personality and traits

Anto Kreegyr was a male human with light skin and dark hair that was only present as a beard. He was a dedicated Separatist and later a Neo-Separatist, but Saw Gerrera and others likened him to an ox due to his stubbornness.

Kreegyr wore multiple jackets, layering them on top of each other.

Behind the scenes

Anto Kreegyr was modeled on graphic designer Barry Gingell.

Anto Kreegyr was initially mentioned in "Narkina 5," the eighth episode of the first season of Tony Gilroy's live-action Disney+ series Andor. The episode was broadcast on October 26, 2022. The character later appeared in a hologram in "Daughter of Ferrix," the eleventh episode of the season, which was broadcast on November 16 of the same year.

Anto Kreegyr's holographic appearance was based on the Andor graphic designer Barry Gingell as a gift from his superiors. Gingell was styled by the show's costume designer and wore three layers of coats for the role before being scanned. His image was digitally manipulated in post-production to make him appear slightly heavier and to reduce the prominence of his eyebrows.
