An X-ceptor represented an example of Ugly starfighter design, a testament to creative engineering. Specifically, the solar collectors taken from Imperial TIE Interceptor starfighters were integrated onto the main body of Incom T-65 X-wings, resulting in the creation of a craft known as an X-ceptor, which was generally classified as another type of Ugly starfighter.
These Uglies were frequently constructed by independent manufacturers utilizing recovered wreckage from various starfighters and freighters, with records indicating their use throughout the galaxy. The S-foils responsible for the X-wing's agility were replaced by solar panels obtained from Imperial TIE Interceptors, while the fuselage and engines of the Incom X-Wing were preserved. Due to the removal of the S-foil wings and weapon mounts, the X-ceptor solar panels were modified to house heavy lasers, similar to the X-wings, giving this Ugly variant some similarities to standard X-Wings. The X-ceptor maintained a limited hyperdrive capability and sublight speed by keeping the X-Wing's engines.
In terms of performance, this variant was not as efficient as either the X-Wings or the Interceptors. The construction quality was often unreliable due to the use of salvaged components and recycled hulls from shipwrecks. Often barely able to fly in space, they were more often employed by pirate groups, smugglers, or independent defense groups who lacked the resources to acquire advanced starfighters. While effective against unarmed vessels, they were generally outmatched by most dedicated starfighters.
X-ceptors were created by combining the heat radiators of a TIE Interceptor with the hull of an X-wing. They proved to be significantly more capable than standard X-TIE Fighters because they had four laser cannons, but they still usually could not compete with a purpose-built military starfighter.
X-ceptors participated in the Battle of Dantooine, where Jaina Solo provided cover for one as it initiated an attack run against the advancing Yuuzhan Vong forces.
