The Empire Strikes Back was adapted into a book-and-record format, drawing from the junior novelization of the motion picture Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. This release was part of the Read-Along Adventures series by Buena Vista Records, debuting in 1980. Jymn Magon produced it, and it stands as one of the rare projects authorized by Black Falcon Ltd., a now-defunct subsidiary of Lucasfilm. The narrator's identity remains unknown because the book and record did not include credits.
In 1984, the cassette version was included in a collection featuring adaptations of the other two original films.
TW Kids re-released the identical audio and text in December of 1994 under the title Classic Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back book-and-tape, but with updated packaging and images.
Walt Disney Records put out a new book-and-tape adaptation in 1997 that incorporated content from the Special Edition of The Empire Strikes Back.
