The location known as The Corkscrew existed within the Outer Rim Territories, specifically inside the chaotic region of the Akkadese Maelstrom. Functioning as a connector between two segments of the Channel hyperspace route, it was characterized by the presence of carbonbergs and the area referred to as the Thunderhead. The spice runner named Tryphon Leo journeyed through the Corkscrew sometime around 10 BBY, and approximately ten years later, the pilot BoShek had aspirations to traverse the same area in an attempt to set a new record for the Kessel Run.
Situated within the Akkadese Maelstrom, a volatile region of the Outer Rim Territories and the Slice, the Corkscrew was a region of space comprised of ionized gas, dust clouds, water vapor, ammonia, and planet-sized carbonbergs, as well as gravity wells. Carbonbergs were a notable feature of the Corkscrew, along with the Thunderhead. Functioning as a corridor, the Corkscrew linked two portions of the winding hyperspace route called the Channel, thereby providing a connection between the Akkadese Maelstrom's interior and the broader galaxy.

Sometime around 10 BBY, the spice runner known as Tryphon Leo piloted their freighter, the Lessu Dancer, through the Corkscrew, an event that resulted in damage to the starship's hull due to collisions with carbonbergs. Leo later recounted this incident with pride in the book that would become known as the Smuggler's Guide. Furthermore, the pilot BoShek made reference to the Corkscrew in the same publication, expressing his desire to utilize money earned from a successful participation in the upcoming 0 ABY Dragon Void Run starship race to finance a record-breaking Kessel Run. This trip would involve transporting valuable coaxium fuel or spice from Kessel, a world located within the Akkadese Maelstrom, by way of the Thunderhead. However, BoShek's efforts in the Dragon Void Run were unsuccessful, which led him to pursue alternative methods of acquiring funds. At some point between 10 BBY and approximately 1 ABY, the barkeep Midnight incorporated a map of the Akkadese Maelstrom, which included the Corkscrew, into a book they were writing.
The book Solo: A Star Wars Story: Tales from Vandor, which was written by Jason Fry and featured illustrations by Sam Gilbey, and published in 2018, mentioned the Corkscrew.
