The initial Struggle for DS 5 unfolded as an armed conflict within the larger Battle for Honor effort, itself a component of the Galactic Civil War as depicted in Legends continuity.
After the successful rescue of Maarek Stele, a Dark Side Prophet and skilled TIE fighter pilot, Imperial forces began searching for the escaping Admiral Harkov. Imperial commanders deployed Assault Gunboat patrols to locate Harkov at Rebel bases, where he was thought to be acquiring supplies after being cut off from Imperial support lines. Stele received orders to carefully examine all cargo containers in order to determine the specific supplies needed by Harkov's fleet.
As flight group Mu's Assault Gunboats neared XQ1 Platform adjacent to DS 5, a YT-1300 light freighter named Cimigo was observed departing the platform. It was potentially too distant to be intercepted before it entered Hyperspace. Because it was a more isolated facility, DS 5 scrambled outdated Z-95 Headhunters from Wolf Squadron, and additionally gathered a contingent of B-wing starfighters, to meet the approaching Imperial reconnaissance forces. Shortly thereafter, the Protector (the admiral's flagship) arrived, deploying its complement of TIE Avengers. Stele examined the cargo containers near XQ1 Platform DS 5 and identified water, liquid gas, ground vehicles, and grain. Having determined Harkov's supply requirements, Gunboats Mu proceeded to destroy the vital resources. As directed, the Assault Gunboats then withdrew from the system when the Protector arrived, a decision expedited by the launch of TIE Avengers from the Protector's hangar.
This engagement is featured in Star Wars: TIE Fighter. Specifically, it is Battle 5, mission 2. This description assumes completion of both primary and secondary objectives. Bonus objectives require the inspection and destruction of the transport Cimigo before its hyperspace jump. Additional objectives involve inflicting casualties on Harkov's TIE Advanced squadrons and the A-wing squadron. Finally, the Protector must be attacked.
