Pliith

The Pliith represented a sapient form of flora within the galaxy. Unable to move on their own, they relied on other beings to transport them. Their physiology, akin to plants, necessitated large quantities of sunlight, along with rainfall and nutrients. A prominent Pliith was Linkaas, who held the position of CEO at Linkaas Corporation. Known for his ruthless business practices, he attempted to have his messenger, Dannen Lifehold, eliminated to keep the vessel he had traded to the Human in exchange for a significant amount of credits. However, this scheme failed, and Lifehold escaped his control.

Biology and appearance

As a sentient plant [race](/article/species-legends], the Pliith were generally stationary—although they possessed the ability to twist and contort their bodies—and remained embedded in soil; therefore, they needed to be transported by other beings to move. The Pliith race needed a great deal of sunlight to maintain their health. When sunlight was scarce, such as during prolonged rainy periods on Evas VI, they used artificial suns as a substitute, although less effective. The Pliith possessed numerous leafy appendages that could quickly turn purple when they were angered. They had very expressive eyes.

History

Linkaas tried to have Dannen Lifehold (pictured) killed.

The Pliith had integrated into the broader galactic community by at least 4 years before the Battle of Yavin, at which time the Pliith named Linkaas was serving as the chief executive of Linkaas Corporation. Headquartered on the Outer Rim planet Evas VI, his operations extended to other Outer Rim worlds, like Dohu VII. Linkaas was involved in illicit activities, including the distribution of narcotics and enslavement. He employed manipulative tactics to keep his workers constantly in debt to him. The CEO had a harsh reaction to failure, sometimes terminating employees for not meeting their targets.

One individual under his employ was the Human freighter pilot Dannen Lifehold. Lifehold was provided with a spacecraft, called the Lifeline, and was intended to work as a delivery person for Linkaas until the debt for the ship was settled. However, on what was supposed to be his final assignment to pay off his debt, Linkaas orchestrated an ambush by several of his henchmen against the Human while he was on the world Dohu VII. Lifehold managed to get away, though, and he befriended a Tinnell named Purr. When Lifehold contacted him via hyperspace radio, Linkaas denied any involvement in the attack, but because the cargo was lost during the incident, he insisted that Lifehold still owed him money. When he caught sight of the Tinnell, however, he proposed to forgive Lifehold's debt in return for Purr. The Tinnell were well-known for their engineering skills, but were rare in the galaxy, and Linkaas wanted to study them. However, Lifehold declined the offer and stopped a final attempt on his life. He then resigned from his position and ran away from the Pliith.

Behind the scenes

Dave Marron conceived the Pliith for his short story Breaking Free: The Adventures of Dannen Lifehold, which was featured in Star Wars Adventure Journal 1 in January of 1994. In the narrative, Linkaas, the only member of the Pliith species in Star Wars lore, resided on Evas VI; however, it is not explicitly stated that this is the species' native planet.
