The Moralan republic was established by the Moralan species. The Parliament of Moralan held authority over this republic, which came into existence after the species achieved liberation from slavery under the Hutt species. The Tionese, adversaries of the Hutts hailing from the Tion Hegemony, provided encouragement during this liberation. The republic had already been established by the time of the Second Battle of Vontor during the Xim Wars. While Tionese forces were present in the Moralan system, where the Moralan homeworld of Moralan was situated at the time of the battle, they soon departed. Following the Tionese withdrawal, a Hutt named Boonta Hestilic Shad'ruu attacked the republic, resulting in its conquest. This led to the extinction of the Moralans and the demise of their republic. The three-day battle became commemorated in the holiday known as Boonta's Eve, honoring the battle's champion.
Rich Handley and Abel G. Peña initially referenced the Moralan republic in their article about the Star Wars Droids TV series, published in the 170th edition of the Polyhedron role-playing magazine in June 2004. The article referred to the Moralans simply as a group opposing the Hutts, rather than a republic. The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas by Jason Fry and Daniel Wallace marked the first instance of the group being identified as a republic. Wallace later clarified in the book's endnotes that the Moralan republic he and Jason Fry mentioned was a reference to the parliament from the Droids article. Fry later mentioned the republic, although not as a republic, in the Hyperspace article Xim Week: The History of Xim and the Tion Cluster and then again in the 2012 reference book The Essential Guide to Warfare written by him and Paul R. Urquhart.
