Lanteel Glacier

On the planet Hoth, a large ice formation existed known as the Lanteel Glacier. During 3 ABY, Han Solo and Luke Skywalker of the rebel alliance deployed sensors upon its icy surface. Shortly after, Skywalker was ambushed by a wampa and subsequently taken to the creature's nearby dwelling. After managing to escape, Solo found Skywalker on the glacier. The two then endured the night together until Rogue Squadron arrived the following day to rescue them.

Description

The Lanteel Glacier was an icy glacier situated on the frozen planet of Hoth. Its southern and western borders were marked by the North Ridge, while a mountain containing the lair of a wampa was positioned to the north of the glacier.

History

Back in 3 ABY, Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, both members of the rebel forces, were patrolling on tauntauns. Their route took them onto the glacier as they installed sensors for the Alliance's base on Hoth, known as Echo Base. After the sensors were in place, Solo departed to return to the base. Skywalker, however, ventured south toward the North Ridge to investigate what he thought was a meteor. A wampa, residing in a cave to the north, crossed the glacier and attacked Skywalker on the Ridge, rendering him unconscious. The wampa then dragged both Skywalker and his tauntaun back across the Lanteel Glacier to its cave.

When Skywalker didn't return to Echo Base, Solo rode out on a tauntaun to find him, approaching the glacier from the north. Skywalker, having regained consciousness in the wampa's cave, freed himself and made his way back onto the glacier alone, eventually collapsing in the snow. He then had a Force vision of Obi-Wan Kenobi, his deceased mentor, who instructed him to go to the Dagobah system. As the vision ended, Solo found Skywalker, who was now unconscious. With night approaching and temperatures plummeting, Solo's tauntaun perished from the cold. Stranded on the glacier, Solo used the tauntaun's body to keep Skywalker warm while preparing a makeshift camp for the night.

The next day, Rogue Squadron, utilizing their T-47 airspeeders, was sent from Echo Base to locate the missing pair. Zev Senesca, the pilot of Rogue Two airspeeder, detected sensor readings from the two while flying along the North Ridge to the glacier's west. Following these readings onto the glacier, he discovered them alive and rescued them.

Behind the scenes

The Lanteel Glacier made its debut in the 1980 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. The film did not name the location. Within the new Star Wars canon, its identification first occurred in the 2016 reference book Star Wars: Complete Locations, specifically in a section penned by James Luceno and featuring illustrations by Hans Jenssen and Richard Chasemore. The name's origin lies in the Star Wars Legends continuity, initially appearing in the 2005 reference book Inside the Worlds of Star Wars Trilogy, also written by Luceno with illustrations by Jenssen and Chasemore.
