Interrogation was a division within the Analysis Bureau of Imperial Intelligence. All enemy agents apprehended by Imperial Intelligence were sent to Interrogation. In contrast to its Commission for the Preservation of the New Order equivalent, it was less inclined to use brutal methods, making it less successful at extracting information from Alliance to Restore the Republic operatives. Interrogation adopted a different strategy than COMPNOR regarding captured enemy agents; they operated under the assumption that the Alliance would quickly render any information known by captured Rebel agents obsolete, thus making any revealed intelligence essentially valueless. Instead, Interrogation favored a more patient approach, employing psychological probes and neuroprogramming to create double agents that were nearly impossible to detect without advanced medical technology. Despite this, they maintained a high degree of ruthlessness, so much so that individuals captured by Imperial Navy Intelligence were often advised to reveal all their knowledge immediately rather than face interrogation by Imperial Intelligence, implying that the latter was the more undesirable fate.
Upon learning of this tactic, Interrogation adapted its procedures to counteract it by releasing several captured operatives simultaneously, but only reprogramming a select few. This presented the Alliance with the difficult choice of suspecting, or even refusing to readmit, all, some, or none of the returned prisoners. This situation led to a decline in morale within affected Rebel outposts. Another tactic involved surgically altering the appearance of a reprogrammed agent and then having them infiltrate the Alliance under a false identity. No agent inserted into the Alliance using this method was uncovered by the time the Galactic Civil War came to a close.
