The Helm of Ieldis was created by the Sith Lord Ieldis before the Great Hyperspace War. This helmet possessed the power of the dark side. When a Force-sensitive who embraced the Dark Side wore it, the Helm could transform negative feelings such as sorrow, fury, and suffering into Dark Side energy. This energy could then drive living beings into a murderous rage.
This Sith artifact was made by Ieldis following years of research into the origins of conflict and what motivated people to sacrifice themselves. The Helm had the ability to channel negative emotions like grief, anger, and misery into Dark Side energies, which could incite entire armies to commit homicidal acts. The Grumani Hierophants concealed the Helm on the planet Sarrassia at some point after the destruction of the Sith Empire. They hid it within an underground temple located beneath Mount Diligence. Later, it was relocated to Skarpos, a desolate desert planet where the Grumani maintained a temple in the Morbollon Mesa.
During the Republic Dark Age, a scientific expedition to find the Helm was being prepared by a University of Sanbra research team in collaboration with the Jedi Order. The Sith Lord Odion attacked Sanbra, discovering the Helm's existence. He then captured the researchers on Aquilaris Minor and forced them to work on his secret Project Pandemonium, which aimed to secure the relic before his Sith rivals could. This team included the archaeologist Mercia Holt and her husband Aron Holt, who were the parents of Jedi Knight Kerra Holt. In 1038 BBY, their trail ended on Sarrassia. It was later revealed that the Holts had given their lives in an attempt to destroy the Helm by detonating an explosion. Although the surrounding Grumani temple chamber was heavily damaged, the Helm survived due to its nature as a Sith artifact.
In 1032 BBY, Kerra, under the alias "Mercy," infiltrated the Novitiates, Odion's group of elite Force-sensitive acolytes. During the Invasion of Sarrassia, she learned from Aunt Zoojoo that the Helm of Ieldis had been moved to Skarpos, a war-torn world in Lord Malakite's domain known as the Menagerie. During the Second Battle of Skarpos, Odion himself located the Helm after taking a shuttle to the planet. He discovered the Helm of Ieldis inside a cave excavated by Grumani Hierophants, arriving before his own team of hunters. Kerra found the cave as well, damaging the airspeeder carrying her fellow hunters to prevent them from following her. Inside the chambers, she found her mother Mercia's satchel but found no trace of her parents.
Odion then attacked Kerra with Force lightning, praising her for leading him to the Helm before revealing that he knew who she was. He declared that she would be the first to see it in action. Odion then used a captive Kerra to activate the Helm of Ieldis; she was vulnerable to grief after learning of her parents' deaths. Odion used the Helm to wipe out three entire armies on Skarpos, forcing his rivals Daiman and Malakite to flee into hyperspace. Overjoyed, Odion took the Helm to Vanahame, the location of a planet-sized orphanage known as a cloister. There, he planned to use the misery and anxieties of the captive children to unleash the Helm on a galactic scale, aiming to destroy all sentient life and become the only sentient being in existence.
During the Battle of Vanahame, Odion turned off the lights in the cloister, causing panic and despair among the children and generating the energy needed to power the Helm. He began using it to trigger a wave of mass murder throughout the Grumani sector. However, his plan was foiled when his General Beld Yulan, convinced by Kerra to betray him, freed the captive children. The surge of positive emotions like joy and happiness caused the Helm to malfunction and explode, destroying it and killing Odion.
