Grand Imperial Navy

title: Grand Imperial Navy

The Grand Imperial Navy, more commonly referred to as the Prakith navy, functioned as the naval arm of the Constitutional Protectorate of Prakith. This force was responsible for the defense of the fortress world of Prakith after Moff Foga Brill declared his independence and became a Warlord.

Structure and Allegiance

Although Prakith publicly maintained its loyalty to Grand Moff Gann of Sector 5, with Prakith navy ships continuing to display Gann's seal, the insignia of Prakith's Moff held greater prominence. All vessels prominently featured the distinctive colors of Prakith.

Moff Brill maintained control over his naval forces by personally overseeing officer assignments. He also established a system where officer commissions were essentially purchased directly from the Governor. Captaincies were highly sought after and awarded to members of influential families in exchange for their support, as ship commanders received their compensation in bullion and goods, rather than the state's currency. Enlistment in the navy was a relatively appealing career choice, and the families of non-commissioned personnel enjoyed security under the protection of the Red Police paramilitaries.

Commissioned officer ranks within the Prakith navy included the ship's Captain (sometimes addressed as "Lord Captain") and Lieutenant. For example, Lieutenant Sojis served as a watch officer on the frigate Bloodprice. The leader of each specialized section of the crew was known by a specific title, potentially unique to Prakith, such as navigation master, communications master, gunnery master, and, on Imperial Patrol Frigates, the towmaster responsible for the towed sensor net. It remains unclear whether these individuals were commissioned or senior non-commissioned officers, but it is known that their deputies held the title of second master. While ship crews appeared to be predominantly male, female yeomans were also documented, such as Yeoman Cligot on the frigate Bloodprice.

Vessels and Squadron Arrangement

The navy's structure consisted of three defensive layers surrounding Prakith. The outermost layer, known as the Deep patrol, primarily comprised Imperial Patrol Frigates like the Bloodprice, commanded by Captain Ors Dogot. These frigates were outfitted with advanced sensor technology, enabling them to monitor ships in hyperspace and provide early warning of potential attacks on Prakith. They were also tasked with locating, engaging, and capturing any New Republic warships or enemy freighters that entered Prakith's space. Capturing prizes brought financial and status rewards to the captain and crew, and exceptionally valuable captures could even earn personal favor from the Governor.

The organization of the remaining two defensive layers around Prakith is less well-defined. Sources mention Patrol command and the Inner fleet, but it is uncertain whether these terms correspond to the two inner layers or even represent distinct hierarchical levels. Patrol command dispatched ships, such as the light cruiser Gorath under Captain Voba Dokrett and the Adz-class patrol destroyer Tobay, commanded by Captain Gegak, to support the deep patrol frigates. However, it is unclear whether these ships were part of the second line of defense or another component of the deep patrol itself.

Ships stationed closer to Prakith may have included Star Destroyers and at least one Star Dreadnought. While ship refitting and repair procedures seemed somewhat disorganized, the Prakith navy appeared to have access to new ships and modern technology, at least for smaller capital ships such as frigates and light cruisers. The Gorath was considered a significantly newer vessel, even by the crew of the relatively modern Tobay, suggesting it may have been a new design produced on Prakith itself.
