Dena Tredway

Dena Tredway, a Human female, was the daughter of Jedi Knight Axton Tredway and the sister of Rebel Alliance operative Erling Tredway. During the era of the Galactic Civil War, Dena became a member of the Rebel Alliance, an action spurred on by Mon Mothma, a leader within the Rebellion. As a Rebel operative, Dena secretly exploited her brother's ability to discern hyperspace coordinates via the Force, aiding the Rebellion in locating suitable bases. However, this operation led to her brother's capture by Governor-General Sebastian Parnell due to his fomenting revolt in the Sil'Lume asteroid belt. Simultaneously, Parnell launched an assault on Dena's home on 24 Tredway, severely injuring her. She managed to survive this attack, thanks to her droid D435's assistance, but her injuries prevented her escape from her asteroid home, confining her to the clandestine Medical Station One.

When Jedi Luke Skywalker, accompanied by Sidney Shortfang and Gideon Smith, arrived at 24 Tredway, he encountered Dena and found himself drawn to her. At Dena's insistence, Skywalker committed to rescuing Erling from his imprisonment on the planet Tol Ado. Following their conversation, Dena lapsed into a coma, compelling the Rebel pilot to seek healing for her from Doctor Ire Eleazari. After successfully rescuing her brother, Skywalker reunited with an overjoyed Dena, who wished to reward him for his actions. However, partially due to the coma and a brain concussion, their relationship did not progress further.

Biography

Early life

The daughter of Jedi Knight Axton Tredway and a businesswoman hailing from the Sil'Lume asteroid belt, was Dena Tredway. During the time of the Clone Wars, Axton and his wife conceived two children on the asteroid known as 24 Tredway, named after a family member who had discovered it. During this period, Dena encountered Anakin Skywalker, another Jedi whom Axton held in high regard. Dena considered this Jedi to be quite attractive. Following the end of the Clone Wars, Axton returned to his family, but he was a changed person. He seemed devoid of joy, as if weighed down by a great burden. With the rise of the Galactic Empire and its subsequent hunt for Jedi, Axton was forced to leave his family. However, Imperial forces routinely searched the Tredway residence for the Jedi, threatening the family with imprisonment until Axton was found. These regular searches instilled a hatred for the Empire in both Dena and Erling. One day, Axton returned to visit his family. While there, Erling confronted his father, expressing anger that despite all his Jedi "magic", he couldn't make the Imperials disappear or protect his family. Axton was deeply affected by his young son's accusations and resolved to stay and fight. When the Imperials arrived for their search, Axton fought and defeated them. However, Axton's victory was short-lived; days later, Darth Vader arrived at 24 Tredway and killed Axton, ending Dena and Erling's father's life.

Following the loss of their father, Dena and Erling were raised by their mother. The death of her husband caused Dena's mother to distance herself from galactic affairs. Witnessing the fate of those who opposed the Empire, she aligned the mining operations on 24 Tredway with the Empire. Under her mother's guidance, 24 Tredway became the most successful operation in the Sil'Lume asteroid belt. As Dena matured, she became intimately familiar with 24 Tredway, knowing the layout of all the mining tunnels. Furthermore, she developed skills in astrogation, possessing an innate ability to decipher coordinates, a trait that ran in her family. However, Erling's ability to calculate hyperspace coordinates far surpassed her own.

Rebel agent

During the Galactic Civil War, Dena's deep-seated hatred for the Empire motivated her to join the Rebel Alliance. As a Rebel operative, she encountered the Ithorian Doctor Ire Eleazari, who had been falsely accused of being an Imperial agent by a fellow Ithorian named Oosea. Dena assisted Eleazari in evading the Empire while they gathered evidence against Oosea, hoping to expose him as the true traitor. While working for the Rebellion, Dena kept her Rebel activities a secret from her brother. She began to collaborate directly with Mon Mothma on a clandestine project to benefit the Alliance. Mothma was aware of the Tredways' unique astrogation abilities and hoped to leverage them to locate new Rebel bases. Using Dena as her contact, she planned to recruit Erling as an Alliance Intelligence operative. Under the pretense of expanding their mining business, Dena persuaded her brother to use his "instinctive astrogation" to discover worlds hidden from the Empire's reach. However, Erling had different priorities. Utilizing his natural charisma, Erling began organizing a peaceful resistance movement among the people of the Sil'Lume system. The resistance gained enough traction to attract the attention of Governor-General Sebastian Parnell, who sought to suppress all rebel activity in his sector. Concerned about the potential loss of Erling and his abilities, Mon Mothma sent a transmission to Dena, instructing her to silence Erling to prevent Governor Parnell from taking action against the Tredways and destroying their operation. Mon Mothma left the method of silencing Erling to Dena's discretion, wishing her luck.

Before Dena could reduce her brother's visibility, Governor Parnell acted. He arrested Erling and sent him to the Deathblock on the prison planet of Tol Ado. Simultaneously, he ordered an attack on 24 Tredway, intending to make an example of the Tredway family. The Imperials launched their attack during a shift change, catching the Tredway workers unprepared. All employees were massacred, and the complex was severely damaged. Dena's mother was executed alongside her entire staff, and their bodies were arranged neatly in her office as a warning to others who might defy the Empire. Dena sustained severe injuries in the attack, including a ruptured spleen and a concussion. However, she avoided being killed with the others when one of her droids, D435, dragged her body from the carnage and escaped into the mining tunnels. D435 brought Dena to Medical Station One, hidden within the tunnels, where she was attended to by a 2-1B surgical droid who attempted to keep her alive despite limited resources. After entrusting Dena to the medical droid, D435 stood guard outside the medical station to protect her from intruders.

Rescue

Dena Tredway lies injured in Medical Station One after the Imperial attack.

While Tredway was attempting to recover from the wounds she had sustained, Luke Skywalker, a Rebel agent, journeyed to 24 Tredway alongside two other rebels, Sidney Shortfang and Gideon Smith. After taking in the devastation, Skywalker tracked Dena to Medical Station One, where he discovered her still severely wounded and in an unstable state. Upon Skywalker's unexpected arrival, Dena feared the worst and attempted to reach for her blaster pistol before Skywalker clarified that he was there to provide assistance. Dena recognized the name and correctly guessed that Luke was Anakin Skywalker's son. After complimenting Luke's appearance, Dena listened intently as Skywalker revealed that her brother was being held captive by the Galactic Empire.

Shocked by the news and realizing the importance of Erling to Mon Mothma and the Rebellion, Dena grabbed Skywalker and extracted a promise from him that he would rescue her brother. Skywalker agreed, but Dena's injuries became more apparent as she exerted herself. The medical facilities at Medical Station One were inadequate to stabilize her condition, and 24 Tredway's infirmary had been destroyed in the Imperial attack. With her condition worsening, Skywalker decided to transport her to a Rebel base. However, the closest Rebel base was 96 hours away, a journey that Dena would not survive in her current state. Faced with a difficult choice, Dena instructed Skywalker to take her to Ire Eleazari's asteroid. The Ithorian Doctor would be able to care for her and allow Skywalker to launch a rescue mission before Erling was killed by the Empire. Dena used her innate astrogation skills to provide Skywalker with the coordinates of Eleazari's asteroid before falling into a coma.

Unable to rouse her, the medical droid placed Dena into a vacsuit and secured her in a full-body splint. After positioning an aural stimulator over her ears, the droid informed Skywalker that he had done everything possible to stabilize the woman and that it was up to him to transport her to a location with a better-equipped hospital. Skywalker took Dena's comatose body and loaded it onto a boss-buggy as they departed the medical center.

Recovery

Skywalker successfully transported Tredway to Ire Eleazari's asteroid, and the Ithorian doctor took her into his care. After a brief conversation, Skywalker agreed to fulfill Dena's request and set off towards Tol Ado to rescue Erling. Following Erling's rescue, Skywalker returned to Eleazari's asteroid with the assistance of Erling's innate astrogation ability. After landing the Imperial shuttle that they had used to escape Tol Ado, Dena and Eleazari confronted Skywalker and Erling, suspecting them of being Imperial intruders. Eleazari had healed Dena, and she ordered them to remove their helmets at blasterpoint. After revealing their identities, Dena was overjoyed at her brother's survival. Upon thanking Skywalker, she explained her family's innate astrogation abilities, which had led to her contact with Mon Mothma. After Skywalker suggested that their abilities were likely due to the powers of the Force, Dena agreed, having considered it a possibility for some time. Erling was amused to learn that he had been unknowingly assisting his sister in helping the Rebellion and held no resentment towards her. With his mission accomplished, Skywalker promised that there would be a place for both Erling and Dena in Alliance Intelligence and that he would vouch for their character.

Despite Dena's evident interest in Skywalker as a romantic partner, a romantic relationship did not develop between them. This was partly due to her suffering a concussion and falling into a coma during his mission to the Sil'Lume asteroid belt.

Powers and abilities

Like other members of her family, Dena possessed a connection to the Force, inherited from her father. She could use this connection to discern hyperspace coordinates by focusing intently on her desired destination. Although she initially believed this ability to be merely "instinctive astrogation," after meeting Luke Skywalker, she accepted the possibility that her and her brother's abilities were due to their Force-sensitivity.

Personality and traits

Dena Tredway was a beautiful woman with long red-brown hair. She possessed prominent, high cheekbones, full, red lips, and a small but firm chin. Her skin was smooth and free of marks or blemishes. Luke Skywalker found her almost irresistibly attractive. Upon first encountering Skywalker, and believing him to be an Imperial, Dena displayed courage by attempting to fight him despite her incapacitated state. As a young girl, Dena developed a deep-seated hatred for the Galactic Empire due to their repeated raids on her home and the death of her father. This hatred ultimately led her to join the Rebel Alliance.

Upon seeing Luke Skywalker for the first time, even with a concussion, she told him that she found him attractive. Even after recovering, Dena openly flirted with the Rebel pilot, telling him how handsome he was and that she hoped to get together with him in the future.

Behind the scenes

Dena Tredway was a creation of Troy Denning and first appeared in one of the role-playing strands of the 1990 West End Games role-playing supplement titled Jedi's Honor. She was later mentioned in the article ComicScan: Luke-ing for Love in all the Wrong Places featured in Star Wars Galaxy Collector 7, which highlighted Luke Skywalker's attraction to her. This article stated that a romance did not occur between them because Tredway fell into a coma after sustaining a concussion. The article does not mention her eventual recovery from the coma, but due to Erling Tredway's canonical survival in The Dark Forces Saga, it must be assumed that Skywalker did rescue Erling. As every scenario in Jedi's Honor in which Erling is rescued results in Dena recovering from the coma, it must be assumed that she did recover from her injuries.

During the scenario, the outcome of the adventure is dependent on the reader's choices. Although the scenario always starts with Dena's brother Erling being captured by Imperials and 24 Tredway being attacked, it is up to the reader to decide how to proceed. If Skywalker does not go to 24 Tredway, he will never meet Dena and the scenario will proceed without information obtained from her. Additionally, Skywalker can go to 24 Tredway, but leave the asteroid before discovering her. However, when Skywalker eventually meets Dena's brother Erling, if he has not rescued Dena then the storyline will prevent him from rescuing Erling. If Skywalker is unable to convince Erling to come with them due to not visiting 24 Tredway earlier in the scenario, Tredway is left to die on Tol Ado and Skywalker returns to the Rebellion without having ever encountered Dena. However, if the group has visited 24 Tredway, Erling agrees to come with them, and the scenario plays out as shown above. During the group's escape from 24 Tredway with Dena's comatose body, certain decisions can result in the group being trapped within the mines. If this occurs, Skywalker will not be able to rendezvous with Ire Eleazari's asteroid in time and the mission is failed as Skywalker is forced to head for the Rebel base 96 hours away. Additionally, Skywalker can also lead the group into a tunnel with a suctioning fan blade. In this scenario, the mission is failed as members of the party are killed and a comatose Dena is smashed repeatedly into the tunnel wall, killing her.
