ConJob

ConJob was a male Human who made a living as both a florist and an infochant. He operated out of Tanquilla Beach, which was a shadowport situated in the Kathol sector of the Outer Rim Territories. Originally from the planet Siluria III, ConJob's family perished during an Imperial attack on the populace. After this tragedy, he relocated to Tanquilla Beach, where he successfully established himself as a flower merchant and purveyor of information.

A familiar face on the shadowport, ConJob possessed extensive knowledge of nearly everything happening on the space station. He was a primary source for information concerning events within the Kathol sector. In 8 ABY, he crossed paths with Captain Kaiya Adrimetrum, the commanding officer of the New Republic CR90 corvette FarStar. Recognizing her as a former resistance fighter from Siluria III who had resisted the Empire, he aided her in securing assistance from his acquaintance, the engineer, to repair the hyperdrive engines of her vessel.

Biography

Siluria III

During the Galactic Civil War, ConJob, a male Human, resided on the planet Siluria III alongside his family, where he worked as a media director. The Imperial Governor of the planet, Quannith, was notoriously brutal in his treatment of the population during the Imperial occupation. ConJob's family was killed in a retaliatory attack against the populace. Following this devastating loss, ConJob departed Siluria III and ultimately made his home on Tanquilla Beach, a shadowport situated within the Kathol sector of the Outer Rim Territories. He chose not to share his past with the station's inhabitants, allowing rumors about his background to spread. Some speculated that he was a professor forced out of civilized space by the Empire, while others believed he was a former cop.

Tanquilla Beach

Tanquilla Beach, ConJob's home and base of operations

ConJob established a small florist shop called ConJob's Trifles on the second level's main thoroughfare on Tanquilla Beach. Here, he sold flowers—including dewy gigglebuds and starburst plants—that he cultivated himself in a hydroponics garden within his living quarters. He earned a respectable income as a florist; people who were used to staring at nothing but bare walls and rock for weeks at a time valued the opportunity to brighten up their living spaces with ConJob's floral arrangements. Even the most hardened criminals on the station were known to be customers of his. However, the flower shop was merely a cover for ConJob's real occupation as an information broker.

As the local infochant and NewsNet code dealer for Tanquilla Beach, ConJob was privy to the affairs of everyone who visited the shadowport. He was also sure to stay informed about any noteworthy occurrences in the sector. His services were costly because he needed to employ a private courier droid to capture public network feeds from Gandle Ott. He always made sure to tell his customers that news from places as far away as the Core would be days or even weeks out of date by the time he got it. For the right price, ConJob would point people looking to purchase goods or services in the direction of the appropriate vendors, and he had the codes required to access Cynabar's InfoNet. However, he would only sell these codes to smugglers who had been recommended by existing subscribers.

The FarStar Arrives

In 8 ABY, Captain Kaiya Adrimetrum, the commanding officer of the New Republic CR90 corvette FarStar, arrived at the station, and ConJob was working at his stall. He recognized her as one of the rebels who had fought against Governor Quannith on Siluria III. He immediately approached her and presented her with a starburst plant. He kissed her hand, bowed, and revealed that he had had family on Siluria III. Although Adrimetrum was a little embarrassed by ConJob's actions, she gracefully accepted his gift. Adrimetrum's starship, the FarStar, needed extensive repairs to its hyperdrive after suffering combat damage in the Shintel system. The only repair bay on Tanquilla Beach large enough to accommodate the corvette was Spang's, but Spang, the owner, was too busy to help them. ConJob, who was friends with Spang and often drank with him, used their friendship to help Adrimetrum negotiate a deal for the repairs. Spang allowed his granddaughter, Fia, to oversee the refit, which overhauled and upgraded the FarStar's engines.

Personality and traits

ConJob was tall and lanky, with black hair and thick spectacles. He was impulsive and romantic, and he kept his past a secret from the people of Tanquilla Beach, allowing rumors about his previous jobs to circulate. At some point in his life, he obtained a functional antique lightsaber. Although he had no connection to the Force, he would practice with the weapon outside his stand for his own amusement, and he became quite skilled in basic offensive and defensive maneuvers. He was good at growing flowers, and he ran two separate businesses. He was also proficient with a blaster.

ConJob was an extremely knowledgeable information broker, familiar with events and situations throughout the Kathol sector and on Tanquilla Beach. He had a working knowledge of bureaucracy, was a skilled businessman, and had extensive knowledge of NewsNets and how they worked. He was also interested in alien species, cultures, and languages. ConJob was known to gamble, and he could program and repair computers and security equipment.

Equipment

ConJob needed spectacles to see properly. He owned a hold-out blaster in addition to his ancient lightsaber. He carried a datapad and maintained a hydroponics garden to cultivate flowers.

Behind the scenes

ConJob made an appearance in Shintel Downtime, which was the fourth RPG adventure in The DarkStryder Campaign. It was written by Paul Sudlow and released in 1995. If the players return to Tanquilla Beach after the adventure is over, the gamemaster has the option of using ConJob to provide them with information about the sector and its events.
