Celly Organa

Duchess Celly Organa was a female human belonging to the House of Organa from the planet of Alderaan. During the year 9 BBY, she paid a visit to the family of Queen Breha Organa of Alderaan, who was her sister. She was accompanied by her own family, including her husband, Kayo, and their son, Niano. During this visit, Celly and her family were present at a meal held at the Royal Palace of Alderaan, where they engaged in discussions about politics with Breha and her husband, Senator Bail Organa. Their daughter, Leia, had received considerable instruction in etiquette and the art of rhetoric from her aunts, which she found rather irritating.

Biography

As a human female, Celly Organa held the title of duchess within the House of Organa, one of the Elder Houses, which constituted the royal family of her homeworld, the planet Alderaan. She was the sibling of Queen Breha Organa, married to Duke Kayo Organa, and the mother of Niano Organa. She and her family relocated to Hallyn, Kayo's home city, recognizing that the [throne](/article/throne] would be inherited by one of Breha's offspring and that [Aldera](/article/aldera], the capital of Alderaan, already had strong representation from the Organa family. From an early age, Breha's daughter, Princess Leia, was educated by her aunts in the art of diplomacy and studied politics, manners, and rhetoric. Leia considered these lessons to be harsh, forcing her into the role of a "simpering princess." During her younger years, Leia's aunts hoped for her to secure a beneficial marriage, an idea that the princess herself did not favor.

In the year 9 BBY, Organa, along with her family, visited Breha and her family, including Senator Bail and Leia Organa. Breha and Bail sought the backing of Celly's family, a request Breha voiced to who she believed was Leia, but was in reality Leia's handmaiden, Agira, in disguise. Celly and her family offered greetings to Breha, Bail, and Leia at a docking station and then proceeded to a meal at the Royal Palace of Alderaan, where Celly and her husband engaged in discussions about galactic politics with Breha and Bail. The senator attempted to bring up the topics of slavery and the Empire's taxation of the Outer Rim, but Kayo responded with a joke, stating that he would rather enjoy Bail's food than attempt to abolish slavery, which prompted laughter from Celly. In an effort to maintain a pleasant atmosphere, Breha offered Bail a beverage.

Leia once ran away to a circus in order to avoid the lessons given by her aunts. Her aunts also resisted Leia's desire to join the Galactic Senate. Despite her reluctance to admit it, she appreciated the public-speaking skills her aunts had taught her, which proved helpful in her later speeches. While Leia's aunts were deciding on her hairstyle for her first trip to the capital planet Coruscant, Leia was contemplating the issues she wanted to address to Emperor Palpatine directly. However, she felt too intimidated and automatically curtsied due to the rigorous etiquette training she had received from her aunts. When Leia reached the age of sixteen, her aunts decided to include self-defense as part of her training, which made it easier for Leia to endure her regular lessons later in the day. Years following the destruction of Alderaan, specifically in 4 ABY, Leia reflected on her aunts' aspirations for her future marriage as she prepared to marry General Han Solo of the Rebel Alliance.

Personality and traits

Celly and her husband preferred indulging in a lavish lifestyle rather than participating in the political arena. She possessed [brown](/article/color] eyes, dark hair, and a fair complexion.

Equipment

The duchess was seen wearing beige clothing adorned with a multicolored pattern across her chest and shoulders. Her attire also featured a red stripe down the center of the front, which extended around her neck. Upon her arrival to visit her sister's family, she wore an additional red sash.

Behind the scenes

Celly Organa, as depicted in the Legends continuity

Within the current Star Wars canon, Leia Organa's aunts received a collective mention in the 2015 junior novel Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure, authored by Cecil Castellucci and Jason Fry. However, none of them were identified by name until Celly Organa made her initial appearance in "Part I," the debut episode of the Obi-Wan Kenobi television series, which premiered on May 26, 2022. Although she remained unnamed in the episode itself, she was credited as "Duchess Celly Organa" and was portrayed by Roberta Sparta.

Within the Star Wars Legends continuity, Celly Organa received her first mention in the 1995 novel Children of the Jedi, penned by Barbara Hambly. She subsequently made her first appearance in "The Princess Leia Diaries," a comic story featured in the eleventh issue of Star Wars Tales. The story was authored by Jason Hall, illustrated by Chris Brunner, and published by Dark Horse Comics on March 20, 2002. In Legends, Celly was a sister of Bail Organa, not Breha as she is in the current canon. This adjustment was made because George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, established in his 1977 notes on Alderaanian culture that the royal lineage is traced through the queen's side.
