Battle of Sagma

The Battle of Sagma unfolded within the Sagma system, located in the Outer Rim Territories', during 18 BBY. This conflict was a part of the Reconquest of the Rim campaign, orchestrated by the Galactic Empire as part of the broader Listehol Campaign. Representing the Empire, Admiral Wullf Yularen and Captain Bannidge Holt led an Imperial fleet. This fleet was comprised of Invincible-class Dreadnaught Heavy Cruisers, reinforced by Venator-class Star Destroyers and TIE/ln space superiority starfighters. They clashed with a large force of Sikurdian pirates, ultimately securing a victory. Post-battle, the Empire's Commission for the Preservation of the New Order elevated Captain Ganig and Sergeant Stecker of the Imperial Army to the status of celebrated heroes.

Prelude

Admiral Wullf Yularen (pictured) and Captain Bannidge Holt commanded a Galactic Empire fleet at the Battle of Sagma.

Around 18 BBY, pirates from the Sikurdian species joined forces with enslavers from the Tervig and Zygerrian species, creating a unified front. These combined groups launched numerous attacks within the Corporate Sector, an area allied with the Galactic Empire, and jeopardized commercial shipping along the Listehol Run and Shaltin Tunnels hyperspace routes.

As a direct result, the Listehol Campaign was initiated by the Empire in 18 BBY, forming a segment of the larger Reconquest of the Rim. Admiral Wullf Yularen of the Empire received a fleet of antiquated Invincible-class Dreadnaught Heavy Cruisers, initially intended for the Corporate Sector. He and the young Captain Bannidge Holt then supplemented this fleet with a smaller contingent of Venator-class Star Destroyers.

The battle

The fleet under the command of Yularen and Holt encountered a large group of Sikurdian pirates in the Sagma system, situated within the Illisurevimurasi sector of the Outer Rim Territories'. The Imperial forces dispatched squadrons of TIE/ln space superiority starfighters from the Venator-class Star Destroyers, securing victory in the ensuing confrontation.

Aftermath

Following their triumph, Yularen and Holt's fleet proceeded along the Listehol Run, eventually passing through the Sikurd system before moving on to interdict the planet of Zygerria. In the aftermath of the Battle of Sagma, the Commission for the Preservation of the New Order of the Empire celebrated Captain Ganig and Sergeant Stecker from the Imperial Army as prominent figures. Later, during a battle on the planet Picutorion around 17 BBY, Mar Barezz, an officer from the Imperial Security Bureau, mentioned this fact to Imperial Commodore Bevven and High Colonel Theol Drost.

Behind the scenes

The Battle of Sagma was introduced in the Imperial Sourcebook.

The initial reference to the Battle of Sagma appeared in "Picutorion Viewed From the Top," a brief supplementary story featured in the 1989 Imperial Sourcebook. This sourcebook, intended for use with Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, was authored by Greg Gorden and published by West End Games. Subsequently, The Essential Atlas, a reference book from 2009 by Daniel Wallace and Jason Fry, included a map of Galactic Civil War engagements between 2 BBY and 4 ABY, noting a battle within the Sagma system where the Galactic Empire emerged victorious.

On this map, the Sagma system battle was geographically positioned near Galactic Civil War battles in the Praadost, Doniphon, and Telos systems. Prior to this, Jason Fry's The Hunt Within: Valance's Tale series, a Star Wars Miniatures scenario published on Wizards.com by Wizards of the Coast between December 2, 2004 and January 27, 2005, had established that the Imperial campaign referred to as the Kwymar Suppressions, which followed the pacification of Praadost II, encompassed conflicts on Doniphon and Telos, along with the battle on Picutorion. According to "Picutorion Viewed From the Top," the Picutorion battle occurred after the Battle of Sagma. Additionally, The Hunt Within: Valance's Tale indicated that Beilert Valance, an Imperial stormtrooper officer, participated in the Picutorion battle before sustaining injuries and receiving cybernetic enhancements.

Material authored for The Essential Guide to Warfare retroactively established that the Galactic Civil War battle in the Sagma system noted in The Essential Atlas was an engagement separate from the Battle of Sagma.

However, The Essential Guide to Warfare, a 2012 reference book by Fry and Paul R. Urquhart, introduced another "Battle of Sagma," also resulting in an Imperial victory, but situated in 18 BBY. Furthermore, a section was created for the book that dated Valance's cybernetic augmentation to 17 BBY. Although this section was removed from The Essential Guide to Warfare, it was subsequently published in 2014 as part of Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Warfare Author's Cut, a series of articles on the StarWars.com Blog by Fry and Del Rey editor Erich Schoeneweiss containing content cut from the book. This placed the Picutorion battle around 17 BBY, and retroactively distinguished the Galactic Civil War battle in the Sagma system from The Essential Atlas as a separate engagement from the Battle of Sagma mentioned in "Picutorion Viewed From the Top."
