The conflict on Ragmar V unfolded when a Republic troop transport was obliterated by mercenary forces stationed there.
Near the conclusion of the Clone Wars era, Jedi Padawan Joc Sah received orders from his Jedi Master, Sev, to journey to the Outer Rim world of Ragmar V. His mission: to secure a Republic military installation. This base would serve as a launchpad for an imminent assault on a Separatist stronghold, a battle that Sev believed would decisively shift the war's momentum in the Republic's favor, provided they achieved victory.
A Republic gunship touched down on a plateau, in close proximity to a small community of exiles and hired guns. This arrival was immediately noticed by Sergeant Remy. Sensing potential danger, Gaan, the leader of the village, instructed two of his subordinates to eliminate the gunship utilizing a rocket launcher. The transport was completely destroyed, effectively dashing any hopes Joc Sah and his troops had of receiving a friendly welcome from the local population.
As Republic soldiers began their advance toward the settlement, Gaan gathered the village inhabitants, urging them to take up arms and specifically instructing them not to harm the Jedi, as he intended to personally deal with him.
Upon reaching the village, Joc Sah and his contingent were confronted by Gaan and his armed residents, who had taken up defensive positions on the roofs of the dilapidated buildings. The mercenary chieftain warned the Jedi that the Republic's presence was not welcome on their planet, but the padawan stood firm. Just as a skirmish seemed unavoidable, Sergeant Remy received Order 66, and relayed the command to his men. As Joc Sah leaped through a window to evade the sudden barrage of blaster fire, Gaan, mistakenly believing his men were targeting the Jedi, ordered them to cease firing. Realizing the true nature of the situation, he fired his blaster pistol at one of the clone troopers. This action proved to be a miscalculation, as the clones immediately turned their weapons on him. Gaan then made his escape through the same window as his former "enemy."
The mercenaries then opened fire on Sergeant Remy and his remaining troopers, compelling them to seek refuge behind a landspeeder-like vehicle. Joc Sah attempted to communicate with his master, unaware that Sev had already been killed by clone troopers on the bridge of the orbiting star destroyer. The comlink message prompted the commander aboard the ship to dispatch additional forces to the planet's surface, ensuring the padawan's demise.
Down on the planet, Gaan presented Joc Sah with a stark choice: death or alliance. He argued that Joc Sah should trust him because he was "not the one shooting at him yet." Together, they launched an assault on the clones, who retaliated by throwing a [thermal detonator](/article/thermal_detonator-legends] at them. Using the Force, Joc Sah hurled the detonator back, obliterating the transport that the clones were using for cover. Joc Sah, Gaan, and the outcasts swiftly eliminated the remaining clones, including Sergeant Remy.

After a final, futile attempt to contact Sev, Gaan declared that Joc Sah was now an outcast, and Joc Sah agreed to join forces with the villagers, knowing that more clone troopers would be deployed to eliminate them. At least eight gunships then descended, and the newly formed alliance of outcasts engaged the Republic forces in battle.
