The School

The School was a global organization situated on the planet of Iskalon. It encompassed all the various underwater species inhabiting the world. Functioning as Iskalon's government, The School's authority stemmed from the collective will of its people. They deeply valued the principle of cause and effect, exhibiting extreme caution in aggressive actions, fearing potential adverse consequences for their world.

History

Origins

The genesis of The School dates back to the era preceding the Old Republic. During this time, several aquatic species were displaced from their home planets by devastating global catastrophes. Benevolent spacefaring entities intervened, relocating these populations to a new aquatic world. Eventually, seventeen distinct species found their home on Iskalon. To foster unity among them, the concept of The School was conceived. While the organization was technically leaderless, an informal head would guide its actions, reflecting the overall will of Iskalon. Despite being composed entirely of displaced individuals, The School maintained an exceptionally welcoming attitude towards outsiders and visitors to their world.

Conflict

In this manner, The School progressively developed fully operational underwater cities linked to the surface via tank/landing ports. This infrastructure facilitated communication and interaction with species unable to breathe or live underwater. Conversely, members of The School would occasionally don water tanks to venture into the cities and landing ports, enhancing the welcoming atmosphere for visitors. Regrettably, The School's peaceful existence was not always reciprocated. Around 4 ABY, they encountered the Galactic Empire, which sought to subjugate their aquatic world. Despite The School dispatching delegates for negotiations, their diplomats were assassinated for their "presumptuous attempts at diplomacy."

Fearing for the School's survival, Primor, the first to advocate for the group, initiated negotiations with the Rebellion, hoping for assistance against the Empire's ruthless ambitions. However, upon the Rebellion's contact with The School, the Empire launched a massive missile from the nearby world of Gamandar, targeting the School's primary underwater city of Pavillion, believing this action would quell all resistance. The resulting explosion generated a catastrophic tidal wave that obliterated Pavilion and claimed the life of Primor.

It was revealed that Primor's daughter-in-law, Kendle, had betrayed the Rebellion diplomats' arrival to the Empire in exchange for assurances of safety for her immediate family. The Imperial missile strike was partly intended to eliminate the Rebellion delegation, which included Rebel heroes Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa Solo, Chewbacca, and Lando Calrissian. Following Primor's death, Kendle attempted to seize control of The School, but her treachery was exposed through the efforts of the Iskalonian warrior Kiro. Shortly thereafter, Kendle was killed by a wild Chiaki, plunging The School into despair over their leaderless state. However, Kendle's husband, Mone, assumed his father's position and vowed to lead The School deep underwater, away from the horrors of the Galactic Civil War.

Isolation

The devastating Iskalon effect profoundly impacted The School. The once outgoing and friendly people became distrustful and hostile towards outsiders, blaming them for the tragedies they had endured. The loss of his father and the betrayal by his beloved transformed Mone into a hardened leader, severing all ties with airbreathers. Mone decreed that The School would cease building underwater cities and discontinue relations with outsiders, leading them into a state of profound isolation for both the organization and himself.

Despite Mone's decree against outside interference, unscrupulous individuals continued to search the planet for valuables abandoned after the disaster. Mercenaries such as Rik Duel found the ruins of Pavillion an easy target for salvage operations. However, The School retaliated against these endeavors, luring wild Chiaki towards the intruders. If this failed to deter them, The School would resort to deadly force to drive the trespassers away. Around the time The School was grappling with this threat, the Empire was overthrown at the Battle of Endor. Recalling Mone's words, the Rebellion dispatched Luke Skywalker to inquire if The School would join the new Alliance of Free Planets. However, The School had become even more isolationist since the disaster, believing that any outside intervention could trigger a similar catastrophe. Although Kiro chose to leave the planet and travel with Luke, The School resolved to remain in its isolated state.

War

Despite the hostile stance adopted by The School, they could not escape involvement in galactic conflicts. Iskalon's strategic location made it a prime target for invasion, and the first conflict faced by the Alliance of Free Planets forced The School back onto the galactic stage. The Nagai warriors, allied with remnants of the Galactic Empire, invaded Iskalon and began enslaving members of The School to construct a permanent base. Despite The School's attempts to resist, the Nagai's relentless determination resulted in the slaughter of many of their people. Besieged and cut off from the Alliance, it was only a matter of time before The School would be forced to submit or face complete destruction. Fortunately, Kiro, their former planetary defender, returned just in time to lead a strong defense against the invaders. The combat skills Kiro had acquired with the Alliance proved invaluable to The School, and he began to gain legendary status among them. Kiro's success against the invaders transformed the School's pessimistic outlook into one of hope, and when the Alliance arrived on Iskalon, Mone and The School eagerly welcomed them.

During the Battle of Iskalon, Mone was captured by the Nagai, but the combined efforts of the Alliance and Kiro's combat prowess inflicted a devastating blow on the Nagai. The Nagai's base of operations was destroyed in the battle, and the invaders were driven off the world. Although The School was temporarily safe, Kiro chose to remain with the group to ensure their continued protection. The ultimate fate of Iskalon and The School remains unknown, but their isolationist stance appears to have dissolved following the resolution of the Nagai invasion. However, the Iskalonians chose not to join the New Republic.
