Publisher's summary

A cataclysmic event occurs somewhere in the vastness of space—a sudden and massive loss of life that sends ripples through the Force, profoundly affecting both Luke at his Jedi academy and Leia on Coruscant. Leia is confronted with not only an assassination attempt, but also a potential conspiracy against the New Republic, and accusations implicating Han Solo. Meanwhile, Luke is on a quest to find a former Jedi apprentice who may possess the key to understanding this widespread destruction. However, Brakiss is merely a pawn in a more sinister game orchestrated by a dark side master with ambitions of becoming emperor. His ultimate goal is the elimination of Luke, Leia, and her Jedi offspring, paving the way for a galactic-scale genocide of unparalleled proportions.

Plot summary

Kueller, a Dark Jedi, initiates a scheme designed to dismantle the New Republic and eradicate the emerging generation of Jedi Knights. His initial act involves the slaughter of over a million innocent inhabitants of the planet Pydyr, followed by the detonation of a bomb within the New Republic Senate Hall.

While Jedi Master Luke Skywalker is on a mission to unmask the perpetrator behind these atrocities, Leia Organa Solo faces her own challenges, stemming from conflicts with newly-elected former Imperials within the senate. Furthermore, her husband, Han Solo, is framed by the smuggler Jarril, who is suspected of orchestrating the Senate bombing.

Han Solo, accompanied by Chewbacca, journeys to Smuggler's Run to scrutinize Jarril's activities, hoping to uncover the truth behind the Senate bombing. Simultaneously, Luke Skywalker pays a visit to Brakiss on Telti in pursuit of information, while Lando Calrissian, fearing for Han Solo's safety, sets off for The Run to find him.

In the meantime, Cole Fardreamer, aided by the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO, uncovers a plot to equip all New Republic X-wings with remote detonators. Upon learning of this, Leia relinquishes her position as president to Mon Mothma in order to rescue Luke from Kueller, who has imprisoned him on Almania. After Han rescues Lando from the clutches of the crime lord Nandreeson (rather than the other way around), and the two assist hundreds of smugglers following an accidental bombing of the Run, Han also travels to Almania to save Luke.

Upon his arrival at Almania, Han finds himself in the middle of a fierce battle between New Republic forces, led by Wedge Antilles, and Kueller's fleet. He also encounters Talon Karrde and Mara Jade, who have brought ysalamiri to aid in the fight against Kueller. Following a protracted and brutal confrontation with Kueller, during which Kueller has amassed immense power fueled by Luke's self-reproach for allowing Kueller to embrace the dark side, Luke prepares for his demise at Kueller's hand. However, Han arrives with the ysalamiri, effectively neutralizing both Luke and Kueller's Force abilities, thus enabling Leia to eliminate Kueller with two fatal blaster shots.

R2-D2 and C-3PO simultaneously foil Kueller's scheme to detonate millions of droids throughout the galaxy. As a result, Leia is able to return to Coruscant and reclaim her presidency from Mon Mothma.
