Sunfruit

A uniquely sweet and untamed tropical fruit, known as Sunfruit, flourished on the planet of Corellia. This fruit found its way into various culinary applications, gracing desserts like Corellian Fried Ice Cream as a garnish or flavor enhancer. Furthermore, it could be transformed into a potent liqueur or a savory marinade. During the tumultuous times of the Galactic Civil War, prisoners confined on the Imperial penal world of Despayre held sunfruit in high regard as a valuable commodity. Even Governor Carmal of Lavisar indulged in the delights of sunfruit liqueur.

Description

Sunfruit, a type of tropical fruit, thrived in the wild on Corellia, a planet located within the Core World systems. These fruits, generally spherical, exhibited a range of orange hues in their outer skin coloration, from pale to deep. A single sunfruit was of a size that it could be balanced on a humanoid's head.

The sunfruit imparted its sweetness to a variety of dishes, serving as a garnish or texturizing agent, notably in desserts like Corellian Fried Ice Cream. It could also be processed into a marinade, an excellent complement to fowl. Sunfruit liqueur was an alcoholic beverage derived from the fruit. When eaten raw, the sunfruit was peeled.

History

During the Galactic Civil War, sunfruit was among the fruits that naturally grew on Corellia. By 2 BBY, the prisoner population of Despayre, an Imperial penal colony and the construction site of the first Death Star battle station, considered sunfruit to be a valuable item. Celot Ratua Dil, a Zelosian thief and former resident of Despayre's Slashtown prison, was a skilled scrounger who once desired to acquire a few sunfruits from his fellow inmates for breakfast.

In 7 ABY, Garik "Face" Loran, a pilot from the New Republic Wraith Squadron, disguised himself as a pirate to infiltrate the forces of the rogue Imperial Warlord Zsinj. During a meeting with Zsinj aboard the Super Star Destroyer Iron Fist, Loran consumed fowl prepared with a sunfruit marinade. He enjoyed the dish, but secretly worried it might be poisoned. Governor Carmal of Lavisar had an affinity for sunfruit liqueur, a weakness that the New Republic aimed to exploit in their ongoing campaign against Zsinj. By offering Carmal sunfruit liqueur as a gift, in addition to military subterfuge, the New Republic hoped to persuade him to betray his allegiance to the warlord. In the same year, the Sunfruit Promenade lounge opened its doors to customers on Storinal.

Behind the scenes

Sunfruit was initially mentioned in Steve Perry's 1996 novel, Shadows of the Empire, to demonstrate the physical prowess of Xizor, the Underlord of the Black Sun crime syndicate. The novel describes Prince Xizor's ability to kick a sunfruit off a tall humanoid's head without any prior stretching. The sixth 1998 installment of the X-Wing novel series, X-Wing: Iron Fist, by Aaron Allston, was the first story to showcase sunfruit, highlighting its culinary versatility as both a liqueur and a marinade. For the MMORPG Star Wars Galaxies, sunfruit was one of the components that players could [[W:c:swg:Forage (Ability)|forage}}. Star Wars Galaxies was the first source to illustrate sunfruit, an image also used in the game to depict Bloom Fruit, GoldFruit, and Honey Melon.
