Sulfur Lake Pirates

The Sulfur Lake Pirates functioned as a band of pirates during the apex of Palpatine's Galactic Empire. On the desert planet Lok, they acted as the primary rivals to Nym's Lok Revenants.

Description

The Sulfur Lake Pirate Hideout

The Sulfur Lake Pirates were infamous on Lok for being the most savage and dim-witted pirate group. They maintained a heated antagonism with the Lok Revenants and vied for the position held by the former Warlord, Nym, as the supreme leader of Lok and the entire star system. Despite their obvious inferiority to the Revenants, they nurtured ambitions of one day deposing Nym. Nevertheless, Nym consistently endeavored to mitigate the animosity between the two factions, aiming to avert a devastating and pointless conflict on Lok.

In spite of their ruthlessness, the Sulfur Lake Pirates were viewed with contempt by other criminals, who perceived them as unintelligent since the group's inception. The pirates adopted the name "Sulfur Lake Pirates" due to their construction of a secret hideout in proximity to the expansive Sulfur Lake on Lok. Consequently, they inadvertently disclosed the location of their concealed base to their adversaries. To offset this blunder, they implemented an intricate security infrastructure for their stronghold. The pirates enlisted the services of the engineer Choster to establish the defenses, but they attempted to assassinate him upon completion of the task.

History

The Sulfur Lake Pirates had been active on the planet since at least the early stages of the Galactic Civil War and were perpetually at odds with Nym's Revenants. Following the Battle of Yavin, the pirates held captive a large pharple, a flightless bird species indigenous to Lok, known as Nym's Girlfriend, as a means of mocking the Lok Revenants' leader.

During 1 ABY, an Imperial starship experienced a crash landing near the Sulfur Lake Pirates' hideout, having departed from a clandestine Imperial mining installation on Lok. The Sulfur Lake Pirates were indeed the first to stumble upon the wreckage and they salvaged anything valuable from its contents. Nym and his security chief, Vana Sage, soon discovered the crash. Given the Revenants' inability to penetrate the Imperial mine, Vana Sage surmised that the cargo might contain more insights into the Imperial mining operation than they had previously acquired. Sage then entrusted a group of spacers, who had recently affiliated with the Lok Revenants, with the mission of extracting Imperial data from the cargo. The spacers, accompanied by one of Nym's slicers, subsequently launched a raid on the Sulfur Lake Pirate Hideout. With the assistance of Choster, the engineer who sought vengeance against the Sulfur Lake Pirates, the spacers and the slicer circumvented the pirate security system and infiltrated the base. During the assault, the spacers killed the pharple known as Nym's Girlfriend, as well as the Bridge Troll, a large gurk trained by the Sulfur Lake Pirates to guard their hideout. They also strategically placed surveillance devices throughout the base and rescued a captured member of the Lok Revenants. Ultimately, after eliminating numerous pirates, the spacers retrieved the memory module from an Imperial droid.

Following the attack on the Sulfur Lake Pirate Hideout, tensions between the Lok Revenants and the Sulfur Lake Pirates escalated into open warfare. Eventually, Nym grew weary of the situation and proposed a truce to the Sulfur Lake Pirates. The pirates accepted, but only because they perceived an opportunity for retribution. A meeting was arranged in Kimogila Town, a deserted settlement in the Lok deserts. Cale Serasai led the Sulfur Lake "negotiators," while the spacers responsible for the assault on the Sulfur Lake Pirate Hideout represented the Lok Revenants. However, shortly before the meeting, the pirates captured Sheeli, the sister of the engineer Choster. When the meeting commenced, Serasai did not attempt to negotiate peace but instead revealed Sheeli's capture. He threatened to kill her and demanded that the Lok Revenants hand over Choster. The spacer relayed the request to Nym, but the Revenants leader refused to betray Choster. Numerous Sulfur Lake Pirates, concealed within the ruins of Kimogila Town, then ambushed Nym's ambassadors. Despite being outnumbered, the spacers successfully defended themselves and killed all the pirates. Cale Serasai was the sole survivor, who pleaded for his life and agreed to release Sheeli in exchange for it.

The Sulfur Lake Pirates attack Nym's palace.

Following this further humiliation, Nym anticipated a swift retaliation from the Sulfur Lake Pirates. Indeed, the pirates were already formulating their next move. Shortly after the skirmish in Kimogila Town, Nym planned to host an envoy of politicians from Tatooine at his palace on Lok. However, the pirates commandeered the shuttle carrying the Tatooinans and landed it in the courtyard of Nym's palace. As Nym and the other leaders of the Lok Revenants—Kole, Vana Sage, and Jinkins—arrived to greet the envoys, the pirates unexpectedly emerged from the shuttle and attacked the Revenants. A battle ensued within the palace. Ultimately, with the assistance of the loyal spacers, the Revenants neutralized every Sulfur Lake Pirate. Nym and all his lieutenants survived the attack.

Behind the scenes

The Sulfur Lake Pirates made their debut in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game crafted by Sony Online Entertainment and distributed by LucasArts, prior to its termination on December 15, 2011. The Sulfur Lake Pirates were integrated into the game as a component of the "Nym's Theme Park," launched with "Publish 3" on October 8, 2003. This questline was later revamped with the launch of the "Game Update 16: Stronghold of the Lok Revenants," on March 23, 2010.
