Star Wars Annual (1977) 1

Star Wars Annual 1: The Long Hunt/A Duel Of Eagles represents the inaugural Annual edition within the Marvel Comics Star Wars comic book line.

The story unfolded across two distinct parts, with the second part carrying the title "A Duel of Eagles!"

Contained within this issue is a collection showcasing various covers from the British publication Star Wars Weekly.

Plot summary

While situated on the planet Tirahnn, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia find themselves under attack by Catuman warriors who are following the orders of Kharys, who is the Majestrix of Skye. Han Solo, upon hearing a description of Kharys, recognizes her from his past as a smuggler and resolves to confront her on her home world of Skye. However, the Millennium Falcon is shot down by Imperials while flying over the planet. Luke and Leia are taken prisoner and brought before the Supreme Council of the Highland Clans for trial. During the trial, Leia is identified as an enemy of the Empire, but Luke is recognized as the son of their wingless brother. Consequently, the council decides to aid the two Rebels. In the meantime, Han and Chewbacca are captured by Kharys and interrogated about their knowledge of Luke Skywalker. Luke and Leia, along with their S'kytri allies, launch an assault on the Majestrix's stronghold, successfully rescuing Solo and his Wookiee companion. During a lightsaber battle with Luke, Kharys meets her end, thus liberating Skye from Imperial control.

Continuity

Within this comic, Aragh recounts a tale from the Clone Wars era, where Obi-Wan Kenobi and two of his apprentices rescued Skye from annihilation. He mentions that one of the students was Darth Vader, and identifies the other by alluding to the fact that Luke wielded his lightsaber, thereby implying that it was Luke's father. Since The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi had already revealed Vader was Luke's father, this implication proved to be an impossibility. The anomaly was initially addressed in Star Wars Gamer 1 and subsequently elaborated upon in the 2007 article "Aliens in the Empire." The issue was later resolved in the 2015 narrative, SkyeWalkers: A Clone Wars Story.

During her confrontation with Luke, Kharys employs a technique that bears resemblance to the stun/stasis Force ability featured in the Knights of the Old Republic video game.

Within this issue, Han Solo mentions that it has been many years since his last encounter with Katya M'Beule. However, Rebel Dawn places Katya among the smugglers who participated in the Battle of Ylesia, an event that occurred in the weeks leading up to the Battle of Yavin. Consequently, Han's statement is inconsistent, given that this comic is set in 0 ABY.

Despite some initial inconsistencies in publication dates, this story is commonly found collected between Star Wars (1977) 30 and Star Wars (1977) 31. However, Han Solo and Chewbacca are still on Orleon during this period and do not reunite with Luke Skywalker until the events of Return to Tatooine, rendering this placement chronologically impossible. A more plausible placement for this story would be within the time gap found in the opening pages of Star Wars (1977) 35.
