The sacred spire was a natural mountain peak that served as the foundation for the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. The native Coruscanti people revered it as a light side vergence, attracting various Force traditions to the location. Ancient meditation balconies encircled the mountain spire's peak at the Temple's heart, providing access to the mountain's interior, which was riddled with cave chapels and buried shrines.
The spire was considered holy by the Coruscanti due to its status as a potent light side vergence, drawing many different Force traditions.
Approximately five millennia prior to 14 BBY, the Sith erected a shrine on the spire's summit, intending to taint it with the dark side of the Force, which they ultimately achieved, until the Jedi destroyed it at the conclusion of a major war. Following the Sith Order's defeat and the reduction of their corrupted shrine to a smoldering ruin, the Four Masters established the groundwork for the Jedi Temple atop the shrine's remnants, in a symbolic gesture by the Jedi Order to suppress the Sith's legacy on the galactic capital. The Jedi also had the hope that locating their Temple above the shrine, along with the presence of numerous light-side practitioners within, would help to neutralize and contain the dark power inherent in the shrine, and ultimately restore the vergence to the light side.
In the following centuries, the Jedi Temple gradually materialized. The Sith shrine's dilapidated foundations were progressively concealed beneath layers of plasteel and ferrocrete as a colossal, flat-topped ziggurat was constructed around them. The mountain's interior was excavated and filled with countless chambers and expansive halls linked by countless kilometers of wide corridors. The Chamber of Conclave, meditation balconies, and a lower balcony were constructed on the exterior, displaying a sequence of holo-representations of the Jedi's history, which the younglings were shown for educational purposes. The Temple Spire, an exceptionally tall and elegant tower, was erected in the center, directly above the shrine's location. In reality, the dark side energy from the vergence had been gradually rising and spreading since its containment, permeating the Jedi Temple's hallways and chambers, and weakening the Jedi Order.
