The Rozzum represented a species of sentient aliens originating from a dimension distinct from the known universe. Their history is intertwined with the Order of the Terrible Glare, a rebellious faction of Jedi Knights that emerged during the Pius Dea Crusades. In ancient times, a number of Rozzum found themselves marooned on PL-40112-CE-021105, a planet located within Wild Space. Subsequently, during the Empire's rule, Imperial surveying teams stumbled upon this group of Rozzum, inadvertently rousing them from their dormancy. The Imperials, in collaboration with the native population, combatted these creatures, ultimately resulting in only two Rozzum surviving. During the Galactic Civil War, the young Luke Skywalker encountered Rozzum on Garn, having been lured there by Rur, the last High Shaman of the Terrible Glare.
The Rozzum were a sentient species whose members exhibited a diverse range of physical forms. Some possessed wings akin to those of a bat, while others bore resemblance to multi-eyed octopuses. Still, others had the appearance of reptiles or colossal insects. Their locomotion involved scuttling and fluttering across surfaces. They had the unnerving capacity to infiltrate the minds of other beings through the mouth, inducing a sensation of profound fear and nausea.
Despite their monstrous appearance, the Rozzum possessed a language unique to them, a characteristic indicative of their capacity for reasoning and abstract thought. Individuals outside of the Rozzum species have demonstrated the ability to speak this language fluently, with the same ease as more common languages like Galactic Basic Standard or Huttese.
The Rozzum's origins lie in a dimension separate and distinct from the galaxy's own.
At some point in time, they established a connection with the Order of the Terrible Glare, a splinter group that broke away from the Jedi Order when the Jedi High Council retreated to Ossus during the Pius Dea Crusades of the Galactic Republic.
In ancient times, a contingent of Rozzum experienced a crash landing on the planet designated PL-40112-CE-021105, situated within the Salfrem system of the Wastes region in Wild Space. Many centuries later, during the era of Palpatine's rule, surveyors representing the Galactic Empire arrived on PL-40112-CE-021105. There, they inadvertently awoke the long-dormant Rozzum. Both the near-Humans inhabiting the planet and the Imperials were compelled to cooperate in order to repel the Rozzum. This conflict resulted in only two survivors: Bertroff Hissa, a Human-Sephi hybrid, and Quarsh Panaka, an Imperial Commander.
During the Galactic Civil War, Luke Skywalker, a Jedi trainee, was lured to the planet Garn by Rur, the High Shaman of the Terrible Glare and the last surviving member of his order. Upon entering Rur's lair, Skywalker was ambushed by a group of Rozzum that emerged from the shadows. These Rozzum subjected Skywalker to unimaginable horror, ultimately leaving him to meet with Rur.
Typically, the Jedi Shadows, who dedicated themselves to eradicating everything connected to the Sith, were instructed in the Rozzum language among their other specialized skills.
Abel G. Peña originated the Rozzum, initially introducing them through their language in the 2008 sourcebook Knights of the Old Republic Campaign Guide. In 2013, Peña provided the first description of the Rozzum as inter-dimensional monsters in part 1 of Barely Tolerable: Alien Henchmen of the Empire, a series of informational articles published on the StarWars.com blogs. He explicitly noted the connection between these two sources on the Jedi Council Forums. In the same online post, Peña suggested a potential relationship between the Rozzum and Waru and the Charon, other inter-dimensional entities that appeared in the earlier Expanded Universe. He also implied that Cult Encounters of the Star Wars Universe, an unpublished article co-authored by Joseph Bongiorno and Rich Handley, would address these aliens. Later, Peña revealed that the Rozzum were, in fact, the monsters encountered by Luke Skywalker in Blind Fury!, a 1982 Star Wars comic story authored by Alan Moore.
