An outpost was created by the Alliance to Restore the Republic on the planet called Taul. Its purpose was to prepare soldiers for intense combat situations. However, in 3 ABY, Imperial forces seized it.
The Alliance to Restore the Republic constructed a small outpost on the planet of Taul. It was situated within the Gunthar system, which itself was located in the Kriz sector of the Outer Rim Territories. The outpost was uniquely positioned atop a cliff, accessible by land from only one direction, with the other three sides presenting steep drops. The base included a command center, and a generator that provided power to a pair of ground-based anti-orbital ion cannons. A protective network of mines and traps encircled the base. For emergency departures, twelve starships were kept at the ready.
A command staff fully manned the outpost. Additionally, many Alliance soldiers were stationed there, either permanently assigned or undergoing training. Commander Krendan, who was a Wookiee, was assigned to the outpost, along with the gambler Maidtha Fait, and the idealistic Jedi Warl Thimbus.
To prepare its soldiers for harsh combat environments, the Alliance to Restore the Republic built the outpost on Taul. After its construction, it was discovered that the constant fine mist in the atmosphere had acidic properties. While not dangerous to living beings, this acidity caused malfunctions in technological equipment. This issue inadvertently enhanced the outpost's training effectiveness; the mist forced the troops training on Taul to rely less on droids, and weapons needed to be taken apart and cleaned daily.
In 3 ABY, the Galactic Empire sent out numerous probe droids in an attempt to locate the Rebel command base. One such droid visited Taul, but the Empire lost communication with it, which led them to dispatch the Victory-class Star Destroyer, named the Dominator, to investigate. Upon its arrival, the Dominator initiated an invasion of the planet. The swampy terrain caused the Imperials to deploy attack droids, battle skiffs, Zero-G assault stormtroopers, and a substantial number of ground troops. Though fewer in number, the Alliance defenders were better equipped and benefited from their familiarity with the local environment.
The battle continued for the majority of the day as the outpost underwent evacuation. The Imperial forces eventually seized the base, but not before several transports escaped the system, with the Dominator giving chase.
