Ottegru Grey

Ottegru Grey, an operative of the Bank of the Core, functioned as the protector of Chairman Tannon Praji during the tumultuous Clone Wars. His journey began within the ranks of the Coruscant Security Force as an undercover agent, affording him a diverse range of capabilities. He excelled in both digital and physical security measures, and he also acquired sufficient knowledge to become a competent accountant. Dissatisfaction with his remuneration at the Coruscant Security Force eventually led him to seek employment with the more lucrative Bank of the Core.

While employed by the Bank, Grey dedicated himself to pursuing embezzlers and wrongdoers, in addition to meticulously tracking missing assets. During the Clone Wars, he played a crucial role in safeguarding the Bank against the Confederacy of Independent Systems, which launched multiple attempts to illicitly acquire funds. Towards the end of the war, Grey commanded a team of over fifty agents, enabling him to simultaneously serve as Tannon Praji's bodyguard and financial advisor. However, Grey's true allegiance resided with Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, at whose direction he diverted Praji's financial resources into the Republic's war efforts. Following the conclusion of the war, Grey persisted in aiding Palpatine by funneling Praji's funds into various Imperial initiatives.

Biography

Early career

Originally from Coruscant, Ottegru Grey began his professional life working for his homeworld's security force. He operated as an undercover agent and mastered the techniques of both physical and electronic security. Seeking better compensation, he later transitioned to the Bank of the Core. There, Grey was tasked with identifying and apprehending embezzlers and other individuals who abused the bank's resources. Additionally, he was responsible for locating missing funds. During his tenure at the bank, Grey honed his accounting skills, which proved invaluable in his work.

With the outbreak of the Clone Wars, Grey's actions on behalf of the Bank of the Core indirectly benefited the Galactic Republic. He successfully thwarted numerous attempts by the Confederacy of Independent Systems to steal from the Bank, as well as a break-in attempt by Givin slicers. Following an assassination attempt on Chairman Tannon Praji of the Coruscant Ministry of Ingress by Aqualish members of the Confederacy, Grey was reassigned from his direct duties at the Bank to serve as a bodyguard for the targeted politician. Praji's recent deportation of individuals from Confederate worlds had made him a prime target for assassins, and it was anticipated that the Aqualish attack would not be an isolated incident. By this time, Grey had trained a team of over fifty agents to work under his command, allowing him to confidently transition to his new role. The Bank of the Core offered Praji Grey's services for a relatively small fee, as the chairman was one of their most significant investors.

Working for Praji

Having already established a friendly relationship with the Praji family, Grey seamlessly transitioned into his role as the chairman's bodyguard and accountant. Within his first month of service, Grey was thrust into action when a team of five Zarracine terrorists, supported by the Confederacy, attacked Praji's repulsorlimo during transit. A chase ensued, and Grey engaged the terrorists in aerial combat. Three of the attackers perished, while Grey apprehended the remaining two and delivered them to Republic authorities. Despite his apparent dedication to Praji, Grey's true loyalty lay with Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. Shadowing Praji constantly, Grey assessed the chairman's potential usefulness to Palpatine's ambitions for unchecked political power.

He concluded that Praji was unlikely to be an asset and instead proposed diverting Praji's financial resources, a task made easier by Grey's management of the chairman's finances. In doing so, Grey secretly channeled funds into Palpatine's war chest. However, the money was not solely allocated to the war effort. The Supreme Chancellor also used some of it to settle the gambling debts of Galaxies Opera House owner Romeo Treblanc. Praji remained unaware of these dealings, but the financial maneuvering ultimately benefited him when Grey secured a lifetime executive box at the opera house for him, free of charge.

The Opera House became a favored venue for Praji, where he conducted much of his business. Following the Battle of Coruscant, during a performance of Squid Lake at Galaxies, Grey introduced Praji to Onara Kuat, an influential figure from Kuat. Kuat was experiencing difficulties with her sector's senator, Giddean Danu, whose pro-Jedi and anti-Palpatine views clashed with her own. Without being explicit, Grey implied that Kuat simply needed to remain loyal to Palpatine, who would eventually eliminate the opposition.

The Clone Wars ended in 19 BBY, but Grey continued to serve Praji. He continued to divert funds, providing them to the Imperials to finance various projects. The money was also used to provide employment for non-Human laborers. Praji remained oblivious to the fact that these laborers were, in reality, becoming slaves and that their allocated salaries were being used to fund other Imperial operations.

Personality and traits

Ottegru Grey possessed ambiguous allegiances, appearing loyal to multiple individuals simultaneously. He concealed his true loyalties through friendship and apparent dedication, particularly in his role as Praji's bodyguard. He developed a diverse range of skills, allowing him to serve multiple purposes for his clients. He was aware of Palpatine's political machinations and understood that the Chancellor would find ways to overcome his opponents, though Grey remained discreet about these matters. Grey's covert skills enabled him to successfully "manage" Tannon Praji's accounts without his client's knowledge, diverting funds into projects that the chairman was unaware of.

Behind the scenes

Ottegru Grey made his debut in George Lucas' Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, portrayed by Roger Guyett. Guyett's character initially appeared as an unnamed extra until his backstory was expanded upon in Hyperspace's "What's The Story?" feature. The name "Ottegru Grey" was coined by Nathan O'Keefe, who created an anagram of "Roger Guyett." The character's story was developed by Hyperspace members Zack Bossan and "magicofmyth2." Their submission was used almost verbatim in 2008's The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia. O'Keefe later incorporated the character into his 2009 article, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Praji.
