Mount Corvast

Mount Corvast, a volcanic peak, functioned as the capital of the planet known as Sarapin. Nestled among a cluster of islands, this location was abundant in natural resources and minerals. Furthermore, it acted as the central hub for the planet's energy mining operations and stood as the sole recognized urban center on Sarapin. Its power generation capabilities were crucial, supplying energy to a significant portion of the Core Worlds.

During the period of the Clone Wars, Mount Corvast gained strategic importance during the events of the Hunt for the Decimator. The Galactic Republic dispatched Jedi General Jor Drakas with the mission of defending this vital location. However, his forces suffered defeat at the hands of Dark Acolyte General Sev'rance Tann and the Confederate military. Following the battle, Tann appointed Zian Finnis as the city's caretaker while she continued her military campaigns throughout the galaxy; however, Finnis's tenure was brief. General Echuu Shen-Jon quickly recaptured the city following Tann's offensive, thereby restoring power to the Core Worlds.

Description

Mount Corvast, bordered by a river of lava on at least one side, was characterized by numerous deposits of natural resources. It was surrounded by a collection of smaller islands intertwined with lava streams. The mountain was encircled by smaller ranges containing carbon reserves, which were continuously extracted to support the settlement. To a lesser degree, deposits of both nova crystal and ore were present. However, there were no known local sources of food on the mountain, although banthas were known to roam in the surrounding areas.

To enable settlement, metal plates were strategically placed over the lava pool at the mountain's summit, forming an artificial plateau. Gaps were intentionally left within these plates, possibly for cooling purposes. The most prominent structure on this plateau was the Mount Corvast Citadel, which served as the operational center for the planet's mining activities. With the onset of the Clone Wars, the Republic established fortresses, defensive turrets, factories, and research facilities on the mountain. A wall also enclosed the city, although its origins—whether constructed for defense during the Clone Wars or existing prior—remain uncertain.

After the commencement of the Clone Wars, Sev'rance Tann's forces seized control of the volcanic capital, resulting in the destruction of much of the Republic's infrastructure and architecture. These structures were rapidly replaced by Geonosian defensive installations, with Zian Finnis overseeing their construction. Subsequently, these defensive structures were dismantled by General Echuu Shen-Jon's forces.

The slopes of Corvast were reportedly challenging to navigate, a difficulty likely encountered by both Republic and Confederacy forces during their ascents in 22 BBY. At least one bridge provided access to the mountain, and at least one route was typically well-defended by turrets, complicating any assault. Sheer cliff faces surrounded most of the mountain, making established paths the only viable options for transit. The surface at the base of the mountain was also prone to instability, with lava frequently erupting due to pressure buildup.

History

Early history

At some point in the past, settlers founded a city atop the volcanic Mount Corvast. Situated above the lava pool at the summit, it evolved into both the capital city of Sarapin and the central command for the planet's mining operations. In addition to providing an ideal vantage point for monitoring mining activities, the abundance of carbon deposits surrounding the city ensured a steady supply of natural resources.

Clone Wars

In the early stages of the Clone Wars, Republic High Command became concerned that the Confederacy of Independent Systems might attempt to secure Sarapin's energy resources, thereby gaining a cost-effective power source. Such an event could also lead to prolonged power outages across numerous critical Core Worlds; consequently, High Command sought to reinforce the planet's defenses.

Jedi General Jor Drakas was dispatched to Sarapin, where he established a base at Mount Corvast. This position allowed him to closely monitor the mining process to prevent sabotage and provided an excellent vantage point in the event of a Confederate invasion. He also implemented an orbital defense system to counter any attempts to bombard Corvast from space.

First Battle of Sarapin

Sev'rance Tann's Decimators attack Mount Corvast.

General Sev'rance Tann, an apprentice of the Confederacy Head of State, was sent to Sarapin to claim the world for the Confederacy. Employing the new Decimator technology, her forces breached the orbital defenses and landed near Corvast. Drakas observed as Tann's troops overwhelmed his defenses, pushing aside the clone troopers deployed to impede their progress. During her ascent to the summit of Mount Corvast, her forces destroyed many of the laser drills lining the path, causing lasting damage to the intricate mining operation.

Tann's forces eventually reached the city atop the mountain, but to the surprise of the Chiss general, Drakas had reserved his best troops. His heavy turrets unleashed a barrage upon the Confederacy troops, who retaliated with the powerful Decimators. As the battle intensified, both generals engaged in combat, their golden lightsabers slicing through enemy troops. Ultimately, Tann's forces overcame the Republic's defenses, destroying the turrets and eliminating the troops. Drakas died amidst the chaos, although the circumstances of his death—whether at Tann's hand or otherwise—remain unknown. Confederacy forces stormed the Mount Corvast Citadel, inflicting significant damage, and Tann disrupted the power supply to approximately eighty percent of the Core Worlds. Zian Finnis was brought in to oversee the repairs to the Mount Corvast defenses and to ensure that the Confederacy benefited from Sarapin's resources.

Second Battle of Sarapin

The Republic's response was swift, much to the detriment of the Confederacy. The Jedi Council dispatched General Echuu Shen-Jon and his new Padawan, Naat Reath, to reclaim the energy planet for the Republic. Finnis had scarcely had time to install his own Geonosian-based defensive structures and had certainly not begun repairing the existing Corvast buildings that had been severely damaged during Tann's attack. As a result, Shen-Jon's advance was considerably easier than Tann's, and he successfully recaptured Mount Corvast, restoring power to the Core Worlds.

Inhabitants

Sarapin lacked any known native sentient species, but Mount Corvast was populated by Humans and other employees following the establishment of the mining operations. With the outbreak of the Clone Wars, a substantial garrison of clone troopers resided in barracks within the city walls. When Zian Finnis assumed control of the city, it housed a small defensive force of droids and Geonosian builders.

Locations

Mount Corvast Citadel

The Mount Corvast Citadel, the largest structure in Mount Corvast, served as the operational center for the planet's mining activities. Located in the heart of the city, the building was nearly destroyed by Sev'rance Tann during her conquest of the world but was presumably restored by the Republic when Echuu Shen-Jon reclaimed it.

Mount Corvast Spaceport

Mount Corvast featured a small spaceport that functioned as the planet's transportation hub. It is possible that this structure was destroyed by Sev'rance Tann during her attack on the mountain. Regardless, the Confederacy did not establish its own spaceport during its occupation.

Republic defenses

During the Clone Wars, the Republic established various defenses to repel attacking forces. These included at least two fortresses and several turrets, designed for both anti-infantry and anti-air combat. A series of factories and training facilities were also constructed along the city's outskirts.

Behind the scenes

Mount Corvast made its initial appearance in the LucasArts expansion pack for Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, Clone Campaigns. It also received a brief mention in Daniel Wallace's The New Essential Chronology.
