Plot summary

The return of Zayne to Taris attracts significant public attention. On his way toward the Jedi Tower, Valius Ying pulls him through a crowd in the Upper City, expressing excitement and anticipation to witness the Jedi swiftly deliver justice to the individual accused of murdering five of their kind.

Upon their arrival at the Tower, Lucien requests that Valius await his payment. In the meantime, he reveals to Zayne the truth concerning the events that transpired just before Zayne entered the ceremonial chamber, where he discovered the lifeless bodies of the four Padawans and the Masters with their lightsabers drawn. According to Lucien's account, Zayne's delayed arrival was anticipated, and the Masters were prepared to wait. However, it was Shad Jelavan who caught them off guard. Shad, noticing Lucien wearing his lightsaber during the supposed knighting ceremony, deduced that Zayne was also slated to be knighted. This revelation surprised him, given that the Masters had consistently dismissed Zayne. The Masters were compelled to fabricate impromptu justifications, which heightened Shad's suspicions and forced them to launch a premature attack—just moments before Zayne's entrance.

Throughout Lucien's narrative, Valius makes multiple attempts to interrupt, driven solely by his desire to receive his payment and depart. Ultimately, Lucien eliminates him to prevent him from becoming an unwanted witness. The Masters then disclose to Zayne that they are affiliated with the Jedi Covenant. While they acknowledge the possibility that Zayne may not be the Sith Lord they had foreseen, they are unwilling to take any further risks.

However, as the Masters prepare to execute Zayne, the crimson figure from their visions dramatically breaches the roof, brandishing Zayne's lightsaber. Amidst the confusion, the figure reveals itself to Zayne as Jarael, clad in Zayne's space suit. Utilizing the Force, Zayne gathers the Masters' lightsabers and hurls them into the opening in the roof as Jarael, holding onto him, propels them through the hole using a jetpack.

A week later, with riots erupting across Taris, the five Masters receive orders to return to Coruscant. They acknowledge that Taris is now vulnerable to the Mandalorians. Suddenly, Lucien receives a communication from his former Padawan. Zayne asserts that he has experienced a vision of his own, foreseeing that one of the Masters will confess and exonerate him. He vows to hunt down all of them, sparing only the one who confesses. Zayne concludes by stating that if his actions ultimately lead to the downfall of the Jedi Order, the Masters should recognize that they were the instigators.
