Kelly Vermillion was a hybrid individual, part Human and part Orlak, from legends. His physique was slender, and he possessed crimson hair along with reddish-tan fur at the ends of his limbs. He had pointed ears and a "nasty-looking" tail that could grasp objects. His height was approximately five and a half feet, which equals about 1.67 meters. He was always armed to the teeth, carrying enough weaponry to single-handedly defeat everyone in a bar. While he kept his arsenal well-concealed, observant eyes could still detect it.
Kelly's alien looks made him easily noticeable, but even if they didn't, his constant carrying of a small armory would. He carried a knife sheathed in a jeweled scabbard, but he preferred to fight with his pair of vibroblades. The knife's purpose was unknown, perhaps it was purely for aesthetic reasons. He was known to have a short temper, much like the explosives he favored, typically carrying two grenades. However, a mishap involving a thermal detonator made him wary of explosives in the hands of others.
He was famous for possessing the appropriate instrument for any task, and he was also highly adept at crafting and utilizing rudimentary weapons or contraptions from discarded machinery.
He was the head of a small team that included Tyric and Nana. While situated on the planet of Mandrine, inside a tavern known as Maizie's, they encountered the smuggler Captain Scarlet Bloodhawk. During their conversation, a hoodlum named Kronus and his henchmen entered the bar, instigating a fight. While Bloodhawk and other bar patrons sought cover, Kelly and his crew engaged and eliminated Kronus and his thugs. Subsequently, they proceeded to the Rebel base on the planet, where a Proliferan called Red was integrated into their group.
After their departure from the planet, Kelly and his band of outcasts journeyed to the planet Kessel, where they somehow obtained the starship named Long Shot from the spice mines. Soon after, they renamed the vessel the Menagerie to commemorate their diverse group.
Shortly thereafter, the crew formally enlisted with the Rebellion, and they became involved in the resettlement efforts following the apparent treason committed by the droid VDT-1E. Red was eventually exposed as a spy working for the Proliferan Empire and was imprisoned for his espionage activities. This was a disappointment for Kelly, as he had placed his trust in the insectoid and believed he could be redeemed.
