The Kathol Republic constituted a minor dominion located within the Kathol Outback, with its nucleus in the Episol system.
About a score of years before 8 ABY, the Kathol Republic came into being. It was founded by various politicians attempting to flee the collapsing Galactic Republic. These politicians, along with colonists who shared their views, journeyed to the Kathol Outback. There, they established settlements on fourteen planets distributed across ten adjacent star systems. Initially, only a couple of these planets could sustain life without terraforming, and some required colonists to reside in biospheres. Despite these challenges, the colonists were undeterred, eager to construct a more promising future for themselves and their descendants.
Regrettably, the Republic eventually experienced internal political strife as the descendants of the original colonists ascended to leadership positions. Having never personally encountered the turmoil their predecessors had sought to escape, they replicated the same deceitful practices, competing for authority in their endeavors to become President and designate their home planet as the Kathol Republic's governmental center.
The Republic's government was cognizant of the Galactic Republic's demise and the subsequent emergence of the Galactic Empire. They were also aware of the civil conflict between the Empire and a faction known as the New Republic. The initial settlers held unfavorable sentiments towards Palpatine and his Empire, yet they remained indifferent regarding who was assigned to govern the Kathol sector. As of 8 ABY, they had not yet formulated an opinion about the nascent New Republic.
In 7 ABY, Senator Sho'ban Do from Pitann commenced planning a coup to depose President Chandra Hobat. His plan involved creating a remote control device capable of seizing control of all droids on a given planet. To mask his activities, he initiated a series of droid gladiatorial contests, which sparked considerable debate within the senatorial chambers.
Following an incident in 8 ABY, the Kathol Republic initially believed the New Republic to be an oppressive force seeking to seize their planets. However, Captain Kaiya Adrimetrum, the commander of the New Republic corvette FarStar, successfully persuaded President Hobat of the truth and exposed Do's scheme to overthrow the legitimate government. Subsequently, Hobat consented to a preliminary alliance with the New Republic.
Irrespective of size, each member world within the Kathol Republic elected eleven senators to participate in the Senatorial Council. From this group of eleven, one was nominated as their planet's candidate for president. The president was then selected from the fourteen candidates through a majority vote by all residents of the Republic.
The official governmental seat for the Kathol Republic was consistently the homeworld of the current president. Due to the substantial population on the capital, Dayark, the elected president was typically a native of the colony. The president served as a facilitator for the senatorial council and acted as the symbolic leader of the military. A presidential term lasted three years, with the possibility of serving at least two consecutive terms.
Under the proxy law of the Kathol Republic, representatives from a foreign nation could be held responsible for the actions committed by other members of that nation. Consequently, the crew of the FarStar were subjected to trial for the deeds of the Lialic II (disguised as the Lance of Endor) in 8 ABY, given that both identified as representatives of the New Republic.
The Kathol Republic maintained a modest fleet of capital ships, many of which the Empire regarded as outdated. The mainstay of the Kathol Republic fleet comprised several Republic Sienar Systems Marauder-class corvettes. The Republic also had a contingent of Marines for conducting boarding actions in space.
