Joralla system

The Joralla system was situated within the Mektrun sector of the Mid Rim region. The Jaska star, a red giant, resided at the heart of this system, with three planets in orbit around it: Manalin and Grall, both poisonous, and Joralla, a tropical jungle world.

A diverse array of animal and plant life thrived on Joralla, which was their home. The Tikiarri, a tribal avian sentient species, were native to this jungle planet. Their aggressive and unruly behavior caused problems for nearby star systems. The humanoid Wasilsi, believed to have originated from another world, also lived on Joralla until they eventually became extinct.

Approximately in 3643 BBY, a plague outbreak led to Joralla being placed under quarantine and blockaded. Later, during the Galactic Empire's reign, Moff Debin Seylas deployed a patrol of Skipray Blastboats to the Joralla system to curb the Tikiarri's disruptive activities in neighboring systems. Around that time, an Imperial spy sought to obtain a Rebel Alliance data disk that had been stolen by freighter captain Adriav Kavos. Consequently, Kavos, the spy, and a group of Rebel operatives dispatched to recover the disk all converged on Joralla.

Description

The Joralla system was located within the Mektrun sector, which forms part of the Western Reaches area of the Mid Rim. At its center was the Jaska star, classified as a red giant, around which three planets revolved in orbit: Manalin, a hot and rocky world; Grall, a temperate planet; and Joralla, a terrestrial planet and the namesake of the system. None of the planets had any moons. Manalin and Grall were commercially worthless due to their poisonous atmospheres.

Joralla was the primary planet of the eponymous system.

Joralla, the system's primary planet, completed an orbit every 310 local days and was situated furthest from its sun. It possessed standard gravity and breathable air. This tropical paradise featured vast oceans and three major continents, characterized by high mountain ranges, forests, and abundant jungles. The jungles teemed with a diverse range of plants and animals, including arboreal herbivores known as oslets and six-limbed predatory wulkarsks. Joralla also potentially held significant mineral deposits, and Jorallan opals were sought-after gemstones within the wider galaxy.

History

The quarantine of Joralla

Around the year 3643 BBY, a plague emerged on Joralla, leading to its official quarantine and blockade by the reconstituted Sith Empire. During the ongoing struggle between the Galactic Republic and the Empire, a representative from one of the warring factions dispatched a companion to breach the blockade and deliver crucial medicine to the inhabitants of Joralla, hoping to gain their allegiance. The companion successfully smuggled the medicine and was rewarded with the gratitude of the planet's citizens.

During the Galactic Empire's reign, the neighboring star systems struggled to manage the aggressive tendencies of the Tikiarri, the native sentient species of Joralla. They urged Moff Debin Seylas to take action. Unable to officially quarantine the Joralla system without higher authorization, Seylas opted for a simpler solution: a regular patrol of the system by two GAT-12 Skipray Blastboats. Each Blastboat patrolled the system for a thirty-six–hour rotation once per week. Any starships entering the system were warned about the potential dangers of visiting Joralla, and departing ships were often searched for any Tikiarri being transported.

An encounter in the system

The freighter of Captain Adriav Kavos landed near a ruined Wasilsi temple on Joralla.

During the Galactic Civil War, Captain Adriav Kavos arranged to sell a stolen Rebel Alliance data disk to an interested party. This party was, in reality, an Imperial spy who planned to acquire the disk and seize Kavos's freighter, the Isilia. The Isilia journeyed to the Joralla system without incident to complete the deal, but it was forced to land on Joralla near the ruins of a temple belonging to the extinct Wasilsi.

Subsequently, a team of Rebel agents was dispatched to retrieve the data disk. Upon arriving in Joralla's orbit, the Rebels initiated a sensor sweep of the planet, which lasted several minutes, to pinpoint the Isilia's location. Kavos's freighter detected the group's approach during the scan. The following morning, after the Rebels had encountered the Isilia's crew, the Imperial spy arrived on Joralla and summoned both patrolling Skipray Blastboats to the system to capture Kavos's freighter.

Inhabitants

The Tikiarri were sentient inhabitants of the Joralla system.

Joralla was inhabited by an estimated ten million Tikiarri, a highly aggressive species of tribe-based sentient flying avians. They routinely tried to kill off-worlders to obtain blaster weaponry. The unruly nature of the Tikiarri caused problems in adjacent star systems, prompting them to seek ways to prevent the Tikiarri from traveling beyond the Joralla system. Occasional visits by independent traders resulted in a population of no more than twenty Humans on the planet.

Besides the Tikiarri, Joralla was once home to the humanoid Wasilsi. This species constructed villages and temples and used a written language. Beyorth Gommdora, a sentientologist, believed the Wasilsi originated from another planet. They frequently clashed with the Tikiarri and eventually became extinct.

Behind the scenes

The Joralla system first appeared in Planets of the Galaxy, Volume One, a 1991 sourcebook for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game by West End Games. The book proposes a roleplaying game adventure set on Joralla. This article assumes the suggested scenario unfolds as described.

The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas placed the Joralla system in grid square L-17. Joralla was later mentioned in an Underworld Trading Crew Skill mission in the 2011 BioWare video game Star Wars: The Old Republic, although the mission's outcome was subsequently removed from the game.
