Jeigh Esse, whose name is pronounced /Jay ess/, was a Stellan female. Due to her aggressive nature, which was discovered early in her life, she was cast away from her planet. Raised by a group of Rodians, she eventually became a bounty hunter. Esse became known for killing her targets using somewhat unconventional weaponry.
Being a female of the Stellan species, Jeigh Esse possessed a naturally aggressive temperament. This trait clashed with the generally passive disposition of the Stellans. As was their custom for children deemed too menacing, she was launched from her home planet into the vastness of space. Later, she was found and raised by Rodian bounty hunters. Following in their footsteps, Esse also chose the life of a bounty hunter.
Jeigh Esse's menacing appearance reflected her personality. From birth, she exhibited an unusual level of aggression, contrasting with the typical passivity of her species, although exceptions were known. She took great pleasure in eliminating her enemies using her more unique weapons, deriving satisfaction from a job successfully completed. Esse was characterized by her pale white skin.
Jeigh Esse had access to a diverse collection of weapons, but her most distinctive was the polarizer. This weapon could project high-energy charges several meters ahead of the user. It was modified from a BlasTech Industries EG-7 blaster. She also utilized a standard blaster rifle.
Chris Cowdrill created the character Jeigh Esse for the "Design An Alien" competition featured in Star Wars Galaxy magazine. The competition began in Star Wars Galaxy Magazine 3 (1995). Cowdrill, then 15 years old, submitted his design, which was later published in Star Wars Galaxy Magazine 7 (1996), earning him second place in the "Under 16 years old" category. The Critokian design won that division. Leland Chee, the Star Wars continuity editor, later verified that the "Design an Alien" content was considered part of the official canon.
