Jax (Freelie)

Jax, a Human male, was the head of the Freelies, a juvenile delinquent gang that operated on the planet of Vorzyd V. In the year 1 ABY, Jax orchestrated a scheme involving his gang to abduct Leia Organa, a prominent figure in the Rebel movement, with the intention of demanding a considerable ransom. They successfully captured her and transported her to their secret base. However, their plan was ultimately disrupted by the unexpected arrival of a unit of Imperial stormtroopers, which allowed Organa to break free during the ensuing conflict.

Biography

Growing up on Vorzyd V, a planet within the Outer Rim known as the "Gambler's World" due to its prevalent criminal activity, Jax, a Human male, became involved with a gang of young offenders called the Freelies. The name Freelies originated from "freeloaders." These gangs emerged from the Vorzydiak natives' discontent with the complacency and conformity they perceived in their elders. Freelie gangs existed across Vorzyd V. In the capital city of Efavan, the Freelies also welcomed members of other species. By 1 ABY, Jax, a Human, had risen to become their leader. Jax's group consisted of two Vorzydiaks, Bemmie and Merf, along with Choyd, a Selonian and the son of a local Rebel operative. Operating from a concealed location in the undercity of Efavan, Jax and his gang were notorious for patrolling the city streets at night in search of opportunities for illicit gains.

During one of their nightly ventures, Jax and his associates stumbled upon C-3PO and R2-D2, two droids of apparent value, traveling unaccompanied near the casino district. The Freelies, led by Jax, immediately attempted to abscond with the droids. However, they encountered a setback when they realized they had forgotten the necessary tool to remove C-3PO's restraining bolt. This delay allowed R2-D2 to summon a nearby police droid, which forced the street urchins to flee. Jax and his gang later encountered the same droids at a weapons shop, but were again deterred from stealing them when the droids inadvertently triggered a display of automatic weaponry. Instead, the Freelies discreetly followed the droids back to a starship owned by their master, the Rebel hero Luke Skywalker. Upon arrival, Jax and his gang deceived C-3PO into granting them access to the ship, where they discovered a far more valuable target: the renowned Rebel leader Leia Organa. They kidnapped her and transported her to their hideout, intending to demand a ransom of 5 million credits for her safe return to the Rebel Alliance.

At some point, Jax's gang became separated from Bemmie, who was captured by Imperials also seeking Organa. Skywalker soon discovered the Freelie during his own search for Organa and rescued Bemmie from severe torture. In gratitude, Bemmie led Skywalker and a pair of captive stormtroopers back to the Freelies' hideout. Despite Bemmie's attempts to convince Jax that Skywalker could be trusted, Jax decided that the gang would be better off executing Skywalker, even if it meant losing Bemmie's loyalty. However, before he could carry out his threat, the Freelie hideout was suddenly raided by a squad of stormtroopers. Although Skywalker and Organa joined forces with the Freelies to repel the Imperials, Jax still intended to betray the Rebels, hoping to contact the stormtroopers' leader and sell Skywalker and Organa to them. This plan was thwarted when Bemmie, feeling indebted to Skywalker for saving his life, offered to guide the Rebels to safety through the Freelies' secret emergency exit. Although Bemmie sacrificed his life in the process, Skywalker and Organa escaped unharmed, costing Jax his substantial reward.

Personality and traits

As the undisputed leader of the Efavan Freelies, Jax commanded the respect and obedience of his crew. He was aggressive and dynamic, serving as the driving force behind the gang, constantly motivating them to action and devising heists and schemes that required quick execution. Jax displayed a complete indifference to matters outside the gang. He believed that the Empire could rule as it pleased, as long as it left the Freelies undisturbed. Jax refused to trust anyone outside the gang, even when vouched for by his own Freelies, and was even willing to threaten violence against his fellow gang members to protect the group from outsiders.

Behind the scenes

Jax's sole appearance in the Star Wars Legends continuity was in Gambler's World, a comic strip story arc written and illustrated by Russ Manning and published in 1979.
