Janos served as the capital of the planet Demar, and it also functioned as the primary operational base for the Lant Mining Corporation. When Demar was first established, the city's design featured a circular arrangement centered around a specific point. However, following the LMC's acquisition of control over the planet, the majority of the original buildings were torn down and replaced with contemporary constructions.
The LMC's administrative complex, consisting of four gleaming, metallic towers crafted from the corporation's finest materials, stood as the most prominent feature in the city's core. These towers accommodated the company's highest-ranking executives, the governmental branches of Demar, and LMC's Research and Design divisions.
Moving outward from the city center, the next concentric zone was dedicated to commercial and business activities. This area was filled with various offices, marketplaces, hotels, and entertainment venues.
The outer ring of the city was divided into quarters. In two of these quarters, sprawling industrial complexes and refineries mingled with smaller manufacturing plants. Positioned between these industrial zones, the remaining two quarters of the outer ring housed substantial residential districts consisting of well-maintained apartment buildings. Beyond the city limits, one could find the standard class starport and the Imperial Garrison.
Around the period of the Battle of Yavin, the LMC was facing a downturn in its production levels, which had a significant negative impact on both Janos and the wider Demar system. Consequently, the residential areas were frequently overcrowded, and numerous factories within the industrial sector were left derelict and in disrepair. Furthermore, large numbers of unemployed miners could be seen begging in the streets, searching for employment, or attempting to leave the planet via the starport.
