Jak Sazz was a denizen of ill-repute, an Ab'Ugartte, who could often be found at the Byss Bistro. This establishment was located within the Imperial Freight Complex, which hovered above the planet of Byss. Widely considered unpleasant and lacking in personal hygiene, Sazz was a figure of ridicule and disdain. To earn a living, he was willing to engage in practically any activity, including smuggling, slaving, and the dangerous practice of spice-jacking. He was rarely seen without his trusty, oversized hydrospanner, affectionately known as "Grivooga."
Grivooga was more than just a tool to Sazz; it was his confidant, accompanying him everywhere and being the recipient of his frequent monologues. Despite his eccentricities, Sazz possessed surprising culinary skills, although his preference for consuming live food was unsettling. His violent nature was demonstrated when he bludgeoned a fellow crew member to death with Grivooga for the crime of mocking him. Despite his unconventional lifestyle, Sazz commanded a degree of respect due to his diverse skill set. In the year 10 ABY, he was present at the Byss Bistro during the New Republic's daring infiltration of the Emperor's Citadel on Byss.

As an Ab'Ugartte, Jak Sazz belonged to a relatively obscure species not particularly known for their amiable nature. However, Sazz was considered an oddity even among his own kind. His closest companion was "Grivooga," a sizable hydrospanner to which he constantly spoke and carried with him at all times. Grivooga primarily served two purposes: repairing his dilapidated starship and tenderizing live prey. Sazz was a regular at the Byss Bistro, a cantina situated within the Imperial Freight Complex above the planet Byss, where his lack of hygiene ensured a wide berth from other patrons.
Many in the galactic underworld considered Sazz to be a degenerate, and even the notoriously unscrupulous Hutts hesitated to hire him. He accepted any job that offered payment, having worked as a smuggler, an enslaver, a spice-jacker, and even a garbage tech aboard a media cruiser. Lando Calrissian often joked that Sazz would transport unshielded antimatter for the right price, a suggestion Sazz took seriously, constantly pestering Calrissian for such opportunities. On one occasion, a crewmate dared to mock Sazz's relationship with Grivooga. Lacking a sense of humor, Sazz responded by beating the crewmate to death with Grivooga and subsequently preparing him as a meal. This incident discouraged future crewmates and partners from making light of his bond with Grivooga. During 10 ABY, Sazz was present at the Byss Bistro following the Emperor Palpatine's resurrection in a clone body. Later that year, he was there again, just before the New Republic launched their attack on the Emperor's Citadel on Byss.
Jak Sazz was infamous for his unhygienic habits. He was never known to take a bath and showed a preference for consuming living creatures. His peculiar habits made him the target of countless jokes among his associates, though he himself possessed no sense of humor. Some even argued that his continued existence was a testament to the triumph of entropy in the universe.
Despite his repulsiveness, many still held Sazz in high regard for his capabilities. His unusual attachment to Grivooga was widely known, and many wagered that he even brought the hydrospanner into the turboshower with him, although no one ever saw Sazz use one, so no one ever collected. Beyond his willingness to undertake any task, Sazz possessed a range of talents, including cooking, astrogation, starship repair, and the skill of piloting archaic starships.
While at the Byss Bistro, Sazz typically wore a set of plated armor. He was rarely seen without Grivooga, the hydrospanner he had named and with which he shared a unique bond.
Jak Sazz made his debut in the fifth issue of the Star Wars: Dark Empire comic book series. This issue was penned by Tom Veitch, illustrated by Cam Kennedy, and published by Dark Horse Comics on August 18, 1992. His name was first revealed in the 1993 roleplaying game supplement titled Dark Empire Sourcebook, which was written by Michael Allen Horne.
