GTAW-74, with the nickname "Geetaw," was a GTAW welding droid residing in Niima Outpost on the desert planet Jakku. His existence occurred approximately three decades following the Battle of Endor. Possessing the skill to transform worthless salvage into valuable commodities through proficient welding, he provided welding services to scavengers within Niima Outpost. In return, he accepted payments of inert gas canisters, filler metals, amusing jokes, or a power recharge. The droid, along with his mechanical partner EGL-21, were occasionally observed in shaded areas exchanging jokes obtained from their clientele. He possessed a plasma arc welder torch, brown colored plating, and a shielded faceplate.
The initial appearance of GTAW-74 was as a relatively insignificant background character featured in Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, which debuted in 2015. Although he remained unnamed in the movie itself, his identification came from Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary, a companion book authored by Pablo Hidalgo and launched concurrently with the film's release. Preliminary artwork depicting Geetaw, labeled "Scrapyard Droid," was created by lead sculptor Luke Fisher during the movie's pre-production phase in 2013.
