Garrthinius

A planet situated within the Steniplis sector of the Outer Rim Territories' was known as Garrthinius. By the time that the Battle of Endor took place, this world was under the dominion of the Galactic Empire. Despite a population largely in sympathy with those opposing the Empire, the efforts of insurgents to fight the Imperial occupation lacked organization. Several agents from the Rebel Alliance journeyed to Garrthinius, where they ultimately transformed the various revolutionary factions into a unified force capable of toppling the Imperial authority.

Description

Located in the Western Reaches, Garrthinius existed as a terrestrial planet within its own Garrthinius system. This system was itself positioned within the Steniplis sector of the Outer Rim Territories.

History

Garrthinius was governed by the Galactic Empire at the time of the Battle of Endor, which occurred in 4 ABY. At one juncture, Imperial Intelligence disseminated a fraudulent schematic of the planet's Imperial garrison, intending to ensnare any anti-Imperial rebels attempting to infiltrate the facility. In the month that transpired between the Battle of Endor and the founding of the New Republic, the Imperial government on Garrthinius declared martial law.

During that month-long period, and taking advantage of the disarray within the Imperial Navy following the death of Galactic Emperor Palpatine's at Endor, the Rebel Alliance dispatched a team to Garrthinius. Their mission was to forge a cohesive Rebel network from the planet's disparate revolutionary groups, enabling them to challenge the ruling Imperials. The Rebel team's designated contact was murdered by Tyric, an Imperial Intelligence agent who had infiltrated the group. Tyric then assumed the contact's identity, feigning assistance to the Rebel agents.

While the Alliance was attempting to rescue several leaders of Garrthinius's insurgent factions, who were being detained at the Imperial garrison after their arrest, Tyric inadvertently revealed his knowledge of the facility. This occurred despite the Rebel team's use of the deliberately misleading layout plan, thereby exposing himself as an Imperial spy. After successfully subduing Tyric and liberating the leaders, the Alliance operatives united the revolutionary groups, leading to the overthrow of the Imperial occupation.

Inhabitants

A strong anti-Imperial feeling permeated the population of Garrthinius. The planet was populated by various revolutionary groups, each acting independently in their resistance against the Empire. This anti-Imperial sentiment also led to a significant presence of Imperial Intelligence, with agents like Tyric infiltrating resistance groups.

Locations

Garrthinius hosted an Imperial garrison featuring a modular design. Due to the facility's unique construction, Imperial Intelligence leveraged it as a trap. They disseminated a false layout, depicting it as a standard Imperial Army garrison, to deceive Rebel Alliance agents.

Behind the scenes

Garrthinius received mention in The Truce at Bakura Sourcebook, a roleplaying guide penned by Kathy Tyers and Eric S. Trautmann. West End Games published it in 1996 for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game. The book presents the planet as the setting for a Rebel Alliance mission within an adventure seed; this article proceeds under the assumption that the scenario unfolds as described. The Essential Atlas, a reference work released in 2009, pinpointed the Garrthinius system, and consequently the planet, within grid square M-18.
