Fruit jelly

Fruit jelly was a dish of jelly that could be prepared utilizing a diverse selection of fruits. The Artiodac chef, Strono Tuggs, provided these jellies without any cost as his signature offering during his tenure at Takodana Castle. He utilized these well-liked jellies to prime the taste buds of his patrons for the meals that would follow.

In the year 34 ABY, a serving plate filled with these jellies was placed on a table within the castle. Maz Kanata, the proprietor of the castle, was seated there alongside her guests, Han Solo, Finn, Rey, and BB-8. This occurred shortly before the First Order brought about the destruction of the establishment. Tuggs subsequently transitioned to operating from a food freighter situated in Black Spire Outpost on the planet of Batuu. Despite this change, he never included the jellies on his menu there. However, he did incorporate an updated version of the recipe for this particular dish in his third cookbook, titled The Ultimate Cookbook, which was released in 35 ABY.

Description

Fruit jellies were a dish that featured segments of fruit either mixed into or floating within a quivering jelly. A wide array of fruits could be incorporated, such as chando peppers, durang fruit, heartweed, honey melon, muja fruit, oi-ois, shi-shok, or brub berries. The dish could be presented in a glass, with the jelly broken apart and combined with the fruit, or it could be served on a platter, where the jelly was molded into a dome shape with the fruit embedded within.

History

Fruit jellies were served on platters at Takodana Castle.

During his time as a chef within the culinary spaces of Takodana Castle, located on the planet of Takodana in the Mid Rim, the Artiodac named Strono Tuggs created fruit jellies as a signature culinary offering. Tuggs utilized the freshest produce available from the castle's gardens as ingredients, and he favored serving the dishes in a family-style manner, allowing everyone to freely partake in as much as they desired. He arranged platters of the jellies across the various dining tables within the castle and offered them without charge, using them to prepare the palates of the customers for the subsequent courses. The jellies consistently enjoyed popularity, and had the Artiodac charged for them, they would have easily been his top-selling item.

In the year 34 ABY, a platter showcasing fresh, dome-shaped fruit jellies, incorporating diverse ingredients like chando peppers, durang fruit, heartweed, honey melon, muja fruit, and oi-oi, was placed alongside other food plates on a Takodana Castle table. This table was utilized by Maz Kanata, the alien owner of the castle, as she conversed with the droid BB-8 and the human guests Han Solo, Rey, and Finn. Shortly after the group departed from the table, Takodana Castle faced destruction at the hands of the First Order.

Tuggs survived the castle's destruction and soon began serving food from a food freighter named Tuggs' Grub in Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu. Despite claiming to offer a "taste of Takodana" at the freighter, Tuggs never featured fruit jellies on his menu. However, after undertaking a culinary exploration of the galaxy between 34 ABY and 35 ABY, he developed an updated fruit jelly recipe using shi-shok sourced from the planet Kashyyyk and brub berries from the moon Endor. This revised version of the dish retained his classic Takodanan technique but was served with the jelly and fruit mixed together in a glass, rather than in a domed form. He included the recipe in his third cookbook, The Ultimate Cookbook, which was published in 35 ABY.

Behind the scenes

The initial appearance of fruit jelly occurred in the 2015 sequel trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens. Its identification as fruit jelly was first made in the 2017 reference book titled Star Wars: The Visual Encyclopedia. The 2023 recipe book, Star Wars: The Ultimate Cookbook, authored by Jenn Fujikawa and Marc Sumerak, contains an out-of-universe recipe for fruit jellies. This recipe incorporates strawberry gelatin, boiling water, cold lemon lime soda, lime juice, balled dragonfruit, halved grapes, and blueberries.
