Hypothermia was a dangerous condition, potentially fatal, resulting from exposure to extremely cold temperatures if left unaddressed. One could prevent this condition by wearing multiple layers of clothing or by employing a space heater to create warmth. While species from warm climates, such as Rodians, were especially vulnerable, even creatures native to frigid planets, like the tauntauns of Hoth, could be affected. Tauntauns afflicted by this ailment exhibited signs of distress, including loud cries and violent head movements. Interestingly, the internal body of a tauntaun that succumbed to hypothermia could retain warmth for a period after its death, despite the surrounding cold.
Han Solo's tauntaun dies from hypothermia
Han Solo suffered from hypothermia in his hands during an overnight stay in the Iridium Mountains on Vandor in 10 BBY before a coaxium heist with Tobias Beckett's gang. Later, in 3 ABY, while part of the Alliance to Restore the Republic at Echo Base on Hoth, Solo rode a tauntaun into a snowstorm to locate and save the missing Luke Skywalker. His tauntaun ultimately succumbed to the cold and died from hypothermia during this search.
The concept of hypothermia was initially presented in the 1980 film, Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. Its first written identification occurred in the 2018 novel Most Wanted by Rae Carson.
