Amorphiian

The Amorphiians, also referred to as Amorphiian beings, were a sapient race native to the world of Amorphiia, situated within the Mid Rim. Despite their superficial resemblance to standard Humans, Amorphiians experienced frequent irregularities in their motor functions. These glitches caused them to accelerate, decelerate, or spin erratically, depending on the specific nature of the malfunction. Amorphiians possessed the unique capability to restore proper function to a stiff or unresponsive body part by physically manipulating it through rubbing, pushing, moving, or other forms of stimulation.

An Amorphiian enterprise, at the very least, marketed a line of mini-transmitters in 1 ABY. Each unit was packaged with an instructional cassette presented by an Amorphiian individual named Dromboid. The cassette's introductory message emphasized the unique opportunity it provided for consumers across the galaxy to interact with an Amorphiian. However, the manufacturer made sure to clarify that the Amorphiians' susceptibility to functional hiccups had no bearing on the product's safety or effectiveness.

Biology and appearance

Amorphiians were a sentient species of humanlike, multi-interface automatons. Also known as Amorphiian beings, they looked like typical Humans, with their body structures and external features closely resembling those of other sentient humanoid species. One known member of this species exhibited gray hair, blue eyes, and light-toned skin. Amorphiians possessed neural-cranial connections and were capable of experiencing pain.

What set Amorphiians apart from other species were their mechanical characteristics. For instance, their movements were often accompanied by a distinct whirring sound. Members of this species also displayed various peculiar behaviors, such as beeping or rapid gesturing in specific areas of their bodies, including the chin, eyelids, fingers, neck, or tongue. Amorphiians commonly encountered issues with their neural motor systems. This resulted in either a lack of power to the body or a specific part of it, leading to movements that were either too slow, too fast, or simply unpredictable. These power fluctuations could also cause variations in voice pitch and speed, crossed eyes, or an odd swaying of the body. To address these power losses, Amorphiians would stimulate the affected body part to restore normal functionality. For example, an Amorphiian experiencing a malfunction might return to normal by re-extending a limp finger, applying pressure to stuck hips, rubbing the forehead, flapping their arms, or even using tools to adjust a frozen smile. In the event of a complete power loss, an Amorphiian would simply collapse.

Society and culture

At least one Amorphiian company distributed mini-transmitters beyond their home system, the Amorphiia system. These devices were designed to translate speech into any one of 1,000 different languages. The Wookiee Lumpawarrump possessed one of these units on the planet Kashyyyk in 1 ABY. This mini-transmitter was packaged with a tool kit, a circuit-breaker module, an impulse-to-voice translator, and an instructional cassette to guide the user through the assembly process.

The introductory announcement on the instructional cassette acknowledged the power fluctuations that Amorphiians experienced, but it emphasized that these malfunctions did not affect the product's performance. The disclaimer also implied that encountering an Amorphiian was a rare occurrence for most members of the galactic community. The instructional video itself was hosted by a male Amorphiian named Dromboid. The host was dressed in clothing typical of many other spacefaring species: a shirt, trousers, a jacket, and a belt. Dromboid presented himself as a meticulous representative of his species, speaking in a monotone and unemotional voice, while also claiming to appreciate beauty. Dromboid's instructions revealed, however, that the unpredictable nature of Amorphiians could be frustrating to individuals from other species.

History

The Amorphiians originated on the planet Amorphiia, which is located within the Amorphiia system in the Eidoloni sector of the Mid Rim. Their region of the galaxy was first contacted by outsiders sometime between 3000 and 1000 BBY. During the final years of the New Sith Wars, from 1004 to 1,000 BBY, their world remained in territory that was either unaligned or contested. By the era of the Clone Wars, it was within the territory of the Galactic Republic. In 50 BBY, a revolution erupted on Arkania between the ruling Dominion government and the Arkanian Renegades. Scientists working for the Dominion combined Amorphiian genetic material with that of several other species to create ultimate warriors known as Accelerated Transgenic Heuristic Abhorers. The Abhorers successfully suppressed the rebellion and were subsequently destroyed by the Arkanians (with the exception of one who managed to escape).

By 1 ABY, the Amorphiians had developed a mini-transmitter industry, exporting their products beyond their home star system, accompanied by instructional cassettes that promoted the consumer's opportunity to "meet" a member of the Amorphiian species, albeit virtually. The Amorphiia region had a sparse average population density of between one and ten million inhabitants per system around 25 ABY. By 137 ABY, the planet was located within territory controlled by Darth Krayt as part of his Galactic Empire.

Behind the scenes

The Amorphiian character Dromboid appears in a brief comedic segment in The Star Wars Holiday Special, which was broadcast on television in 1978. The character, played by the American comedian Harvey Korman, instructs the young Wookiee Lumpy on how to assemble a mini-transmitter. Throughout the segment, Dromboid's persistent malfunctions frustrate the young Wookiee. The fourth draft of the special's script spells the species' name as Amorphiian, a spelling that is confirmed as canonical in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, which was published in 2008.
