Star Wars Roleplaying Game

Following the loss of the license by West End Games to continue producing their original Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, Wizards of the Coast began publishing their version of the Star Wars Roleplaying Game in November of 2000. This series concluded in April 2010 with the release of The Unknown Regions.

The rules found in the game's core rulebook are built upon the d20 System, which was also used for the third edition of Dungeons & Dragons. Gameplay involves one person acting as the gamemaster, overseeing the game world in a role similar to a director and referee, while the remaining players each control a single character. These characters possess various skills and equipment, and some even have the ability to wield the Force. Additional sourcebooks released for this game version offer expanded background information and statistics pertaining to different facets of the Star Wars universe. This includes comprehensive details about starships, rules for incorporating additional aliens, in-depth information regarding the Jedi order and dark side Force users, and details concerning regions of the galaxy like the Core Worlds or Outer Rim. In 2002, coinciding with the theatrical debut of Episode II, a Revised Core Rulebook was launched, which updated several of the game's rules and statistics. Subsequent publications utilized this updated ruleset, while maintaining compatibility with earlier books. Wizards of the Coast ceased creating new books for the Revised Edition after Ultimate Adversaries in June 2004, shifting their focus to the Star Wars Miniatures product line. This shift was due to the contract between Wizards and Lucasfilm, which limited the number of Star Wars releases Wizards was permitted to produce annually, coupled with the miniatures line generating higher profits compared to the roleplaying game.

A fresh edition of the roleplaying game, known as the Saga Edition, was made available on June 5, 2007. At the Celebration IV convention held that year, attendees could obtain a complimentary copy of the Saga Edition by reciting "Let the Wookiee win" to coauthor Rodney Thompson at the Wizards of the Coast booth. Further sourcebooks, such as The Force Unleashed Campaign Guide and the updated Starships of the Galaxy, contributed additional content and rules, including guidelines for organizations, starship maneuvers, and expansive cinematic battles. Subsequently, thirteen sourcebooks were created over the following three years, representing a substantial line of new Star Wars roleplaying products. These sourcebooks provide a wealth of background information alongside supplementary rules and statistics. One particularly noteworthy example is the Jedi Academy Training Manual, which dedicates a significant portion to exploring various Force traditions. Similarly, the Galaxy at War sourcebook includes a chapter focused on military organizations. Conversely, the Scavenger's Guide to Droids sourcebook primarily consists of background material, with a reduced emphasis on rules.

On January 28th, 2010, Wizards of the Coast declared their discontinuation of the Star Wars license following the release of The Unknown Regions. The Saga Edition Role Playing Game, along with the Star Wars Miniatures line, concluded with the publication of that sourcebook. In 2011, Fantasy Flight Games acquired the license to publish roleplaying material, and they subsequently released Star Wars: Edge of the Empire.

Wizards of the Coast offered free web supplements for the roleplaying game on Wizards.com, and their roleplaying column Jedi Counseling was active until 2009. Following the expiration of the license, these supplements were removed from the Wizards website.
