Upon activation, these beacons would actively locate neighboring beacons and create laser-based connections for data transfer.
Considering their restricted range and dependence on unobstructed sightlines, these devices were probably obsolete, relegated to serving as a secondary system. This was exemplified when Dellis Tantor set up a series of remote relay beacons to connect the central computer complex with the uplink tower on the planet Ruul during 0 BBY.
