Melchi, hailing from the Tapani sector, was a Herglic spacer and the captain of the medical frigate Benevolence. He also served as an agent for House Pelagia.
For a number of decades, Melchi operated a modest transport business on Pelagon within the Pelagia Province. His work involved traversing the sector, delivering goods, and providing messenger services. While the work was honorable, it did not provide him with financial security. He was well-regarded by the noble houses and had numerous acquaintances throughout the sector.
When the Empire and House Mecetti launched an offensive against House Pelagia, devastating Pelagon, the capital world, Melchi returned to discover the remnants of Pelagia's once-powerful fleet adrift in orbit. He assumed command of a damaged Nebulon-B medical frigate named the Benevolence and organized a relief operation. House Pelagia officially granted Melchi command of the frigate, transforming him into a mobile aid provider, traveling to regions affected by disaster within the sector and delivering medical support. Subsequently, the Great Council located on Procopia decided to provide funding for his activities, given that Melchi offered his services without charge.

Unknown to most individuals outside of the Pelagia government and a select group of his high-ranking crew members, Melchi's relief operations functioned as a front for smuggling goods and intelligence for House Pelagia. With the authorization from Procopia to move freely across the sector, Melchi was able to supply Pelagia with armaments and military resources to support their rearmament efforts. His widespread respect throughout the region ensured that he was never subjected to searches by sector authorities.
Melchi possessed wrinkled, gray skin and spoke with a resonant, booming voice, often punctuated by snorts emanating from his blowhole. He consistently wore his captain's uniform and carried an elaborate walking stick, which he used to emphasize his points during conversations. He also carried a decorative heavy blaster.
He was a compassionate person who readily dedicated his time to alleviate the suffering of others. He held firm to his convictions and readily shared his opinions with others. Melchi demonstrated unwavering loyalty to House Pelagia and enthusiastically carried out his mission to smuggle cargo for the house.
